Hi -I am about to get into the realm of building a F-Class rifle. I've decided to go with 260 Remington as the calibre. My plan is as follows:

1. Find the action/donor rifle
2. Barrel
3. Stock
4. Trigger
5. Optics, etc.
6. Put it together and shoot it.
7. Find a sweet load

I know it's more, but that's high level simplistic.

My first question - I know I can look for a 308 or 243 to convert to 260, any other calibre's that I can do that with?

Advice appreciated.

Cheers

Ron

22-250, 7mm-08, 6.5x55, 358, 257 Roberts, some 250-3000s (depends on the maker), 6mm Rem, 7x57, 8x57, 9x57, 30-06, 25-06, 270, 280, 338-06, 35 whelen. The first ones are on short actions, then medium actions, then standard length actions. Depending on how far you want to seat bullets out, a slightly longer action may have some small advantage to you. I would probably stay with a short action just for parts availability (stocks and accessories and whatnot), but longer actions will work well too. FWIW - dan

Have you any preferences about the make or model of action you wish to use? You mention wanting to build an F Class rifle. I presume this will be a single shot; if this is the case then magazine feeding issues would be irrelevant, and any action with the correct boltface would work. You could do a lot worse that starting with a purpose built target action like a Barnard. Contact Ian Robertson on this board.
You should decide which F Class you are interested in. You are in Ontario, so a factory rifle would be a good, cost effective choice for F(M) class. Otherwise, you should decide if you are interested in F(F) or F(O) class. If you want to compete in Open Class, the cost can rise rapidly.

Sorry, I should have mentioned, I already have a .223 Savage 12FVSS I shoot in F Class, currently have changed trigger, and new stock is on the way, will be free floated and bedded.

I'm looking to do this somewhat inexpensively, while a Barnard would be nice, I am more looking to find a decent action from a donor rifle, and then get a custom barrel, stock, trigger and optics.

I've also considered the Sako 260 rem, but not a heavy barrel, and I want a bit of the pride of shooting something I put together.

A remington short action works fine for the 260, just get it throated so the bullets dont have to be way out. The full case of h4350 and a 125 gr bullet is slightly compressed.

"...looking to do this somewhat inexpensively..." Building any rifle won't be inexpensive. A custom barrel alone can cost the price of a whole commercial rifle. Actions are not easy to find by themselves. Most shooters buy a rifle just for the action and sell the parts they don't want.
Any action made for the .30-06/.308 family will do. Same bolt face.
