building a 500 Jeffery. P14

Awesome man. That's the best part of this thread. I hope you make something cool with it.

When I started this build, well my 460 build initially (before that went down the drain with the oic) was to show with a little work you can have these large big bores on the cheap. The ammo and dies are the killer haha

Maybe a 460 short or a G&A 450. Should get you under their retarded limit. - dan

I was thinking something like that. The rifle is in storage right now and with the receiver opened up to feed the 460 cases there isn't much past the weatherby 378 cases I can make work.

So I was thinking either set the barrel back a half turn and then shorten my 460 dies and set the shoulder back 1mm(or what ever the math is for a half turn of the barrel.) Or rebarrel is to 416

Are you still enjoying this cartridge? I was considering one recently, local shop had a Sako 85 in 500 Jeffery.

The main deterrence for me is the absolute lack of factory ammo here in Canada.

Maybe Norma will start producing it again.

Yeah i really like the rifle, it shoots well and the recoil isn't too bad, its sharp but very manageable, the P14 has a huge butt plate to spread out the load. the low butt stock is nice, it doesnt smack you in the face like my 460 does (it has a monte carlo stock).

ive been reloading for it. i have 20 brass and about 100 600gr barns bullets, also 100 570gr cast bullets.
the dies cost a lot that is for sure. i bought a cheap single stage press, I drill and tapped it for the larger die body

and Jim that is a good idea honestly. Probably the best idea, i wanted to keep a 450 in my line up and with the receiver opened so much there wasn't many options.

so ive been looking at this rifle in my safe the last few weeks, also been playing with my lee speed build a bit, i order "antique express rust bluing" for the lee speed project and that got me back into working on guns even though summer isn't over so work is still very busy.

i have a chunk of walnut here that is dried and crack free, its a rifle stock blank but nothing special its just going to be for a standard functional rifle stock. the P14 has the old military stock on it and its filled with oil and not in the best shape. so i planned on making a new stock for the 500 Jeffery build.

while looking ta the 500 Jeffery complete action and the little puny 2 round single stack mag i figured with a rifle like the p14 it has a huge floor plate and an extra belly on the stock to fit the mag box so i figured id make a new mag box and machine new feed lips into the receiver so ill be able to fit 4 round in the mag and 1 in the chamber (4 +1)

i managed to get the mag box done and fixed it to the trigger guard similar to a mauser trigger guard. then build the follower and got it all fitting and not catching inside when fully compressed.

i have machined new feed rails and now opposed to being a single stack feed and having to insert the rounds into the chamber a bit and pulling them back to get the round under the feed lips (similar to loading any single stack mag but when its in the rifle) i now can just drop the rounds in the receiver and push down on them as if it was any bolt action rifle. i started with a Dremel with 1/8" 4 flute carbine endmills in it at 8500rpm but after a while i went with a 1/4" ball carbide ball nose endmill in my mill

i need a bit more work to get them to feed from the right side, they are still sitting to low but i have progress.

so in a week or 2 ill have updates on my lee speed build and i will have update son the 500 Jeffery's new stock

i know the follower and mag box doesnt look the best. but my thoughts were, get it working then make it look good.

i used the math and info in this post to make the mag box. the front of the box is a touch wide i may solder some 0.030" shim stock at the front shoulder location on both side to take up the 1.5mm its too wide

Instead of that piece of flat sheet metal, why not make yourself a proper follower? It will likely make feeding a lot easier when the rounds are correctly placed in the magazine.
In addition, you could make [sadly, the outfit that was making them for Westley Richards & others in Deutschland is no longer extant] a proper drop magazine extension.

I really don't like the look of the extended mag. The p14 is already too extended for me, but since that what I have that is what I'm using.

The flat follower seems to work fine. It doesn't seem to matter what side the first round sits on in the mag, but basically 100% of the time the first round goes on the left side of the mag box. I could add a little angled piece to the follower to force them to always start on the same side.

The sides of the mag box holds the rounds where they should be. The angled piece of the follower seems to just hold to first round tight to one side of the box, the second round also does that. And now that it's not a single stack even the flat follower holds the last round tight up into the feed rails on the receiver.

I'm still working on it and plan to make a better looking follower but it needs to be very thin to make the mag fit 4x 500 Jeffery rounds in it..

It's hard to find info on why the followers have the design they do. But I'm sure there is a reason I'll discover on this journey

Have a look at some of Tom Burgess' big bore built on P14/M17 rifles. Works of art. And Tom was a lovely man to talk with about guns. Sadly gone now. - dan
