Building A copy of A M1D Garand .

So I am going to build myself A M1D clone and I need some help and advice from people who may have built one in the past. I am going to start this build with A Winchester receiver ,bolt, trigger assembly all re perked by me :) . I am getting A Winchester stock with hand guards. I located A USGI scope mound and barrel block that is being shipped in to me. I am going to use A post war Marlin barrel in 30-06 it's brand new. I have A real K-Line cheek rest for the project and A T-37 flash hider. I have located A new gas cylinder that I also believe to be A Winchester . The scope I am going with is A M-84 but A repo scope, this is A new made scope and it's clear and %100 USGI spec. I am wondering if any one might have some pictures of their M1D'S to share with me and other who might be looking to build one.
 
Just to be a wet blanket, why? Having fired a Garand sniper, I cannot understand the enthousiasm for them. The ergonomics are awful. The accuracy is average. The shooter has to be cautious to keep the scope vertical and horizontal.
 
Geez boys, what a way to let the air out of a guys tire. Did someone let the air out of your girlfriends. Anyway Andy, google CMP and garand, there are lots of pictures and guys down south with the info you are looking for.

Sounds like he's building it from scratch, so it's no collector to begin with. Better a reciever that's getting shot than sitting in the grease somewhere, never to see the light of day.

There a video of a guy on youtube shooting steel gongs with an M1D 1000m out. It's no PGW .308, but it's accurate enough.

Keep us updated on the progress Andy, just ignore the snobby collectors here who poo-poo every idea that comes along. Their interests are obviously different than most shooters here and they get pissy if someone so much as looks at a milsurp wrong. If you do everything right, you'll have a nice representation of an M1D that you can enjoy.

M1Ds were all re-builds of existing rifles using the unique M1D barrel with integral mounting block for the M1D scope bracket,so any combination of parts is appropriate. No concern about "matching parts" as long as they are all US GI. M1Cs,on the other hand,were originally built by Springfield within a certain s/n range.

I have both an original M1C and a Springfield produced M1D. As pointed out,they are awkward to shoot because of the offset scope. Barrels on mine are tight and they are as accurate as any well fitted M1 w/o scope. The low power 2.5 scope helps resolve the sight picture somewhat,but the post recticle still subtends about 4-5" @ 100 yds. For accurate shooting,remove the cone flash-hider as it jiggles around and produces the same effect as a bayonet on barrel harmonics.

Your biggest challenge will be installing the mounting block on a standard barrel. The rear handguard is also modified to accomodate the mounting block.
 
I had my barrel pulled and machinded down where the mounting block went...I think it was a thou larger....then tru the barrel in the freezer for 2 weeks.Had a sleeve cut that fit over the chamber then heated the block till it expanded and fit the block over the milled part and ponded it on (not so hard as to bend the barrel)..had to have a smithy replace the barrel and turn the block.Did it in 97 and its still going strong.Its how I did it(back yard technique) but it worked.
 
I am A mil-surplus collector but I like things that I build my self. I started by re parking A few Garand's and decided that I wanted something different. Shure when I get out to shoot my Semi-Auto MG-34 its fun but I was thinking that I would like something that I built to shoot and play with. I guess it's this stupid pride I have but I just like stuff I do my self. I will post some pic's in the next few days
 
Nice project but don't expect to recoup your cost and time on resell. Clone is never a hot seller.
 
I had an M1D Springfield with M84 scope back when I was 18. It was an awesome rifle and alot of fun to shoot!!! I stupidly sold it two years later for $350 (which was what I had paid) to a family friend.:bangHead: Some years later when I began to get into collecting and realized what i had done, it was too late to get my rifle back from him as he had moved back to Germany. :bangHead:
 
I love my M1D clone. Shoots just a shade under 2 MOA with the right reloads. Would not sell it for a long, long time. Good luck with the project, and keep us updated with pictures and info.
 
I just bought a cloned Mauser sniper. I am sure I am going to have great fun with it. I have all original milsurps too, equally fun. Just do what you want, don't worry about the the "snobs" who poo poo your ideas. Build your toy, have fun doing it and enjoy shooting it when you are complete.

If it ever comes to the point where it is time for the rifle to have new owner, be honest about what it is and let somebody else enjoy it.

In the mean time, share your progress with the rest of us nutz. If people don't like it, there are other threads for them to look at.

I have been lucky/fortunate enough to be able to acquire WWII original sniper rifles (US and British) and can respect some of the comments made here especially WRT fakes.



Having said that, I have also several repros ( US and British) sniper clones that I really enjoy shooting and that I can use w/o fear of damaging.
In addition these clones are often times better shooters since you can select the donor rifle and/or decide to switch barrel for a better condition barrel.

A good exemple would be about a USMC 1903A1 Model 1941- Unertl sniper rifle.

Try to find one....

Idem for M1917 with A5 on....

I am trying to complete the M1917 with proper mounts. long term projects.

So many projects, so little time.

BTW, I still have a M84 repro scope, new condition, that was waiting for a donor rifle. I have decided to let it go.
