Building a non-restricted .22 modern sporter, help needed

i'm sorry if this is in the wrong area, i'm still trying to figure out all these forums. i'm guessing that's why my post from yesterday was deleted? i posted it in the supplier's forum but when I went to check on it today it was gone. i'm not really sure why or if i violated some policy or something as it doesn't seem to have been moved.

so what i'm wanting is an ar15ish .22 for backyard shooting, so non-restricted. i do already have an ar15 but without a range to shoot it at it sits doing nothing in my gun cabinet all day. eventhough i have a perfectly good backyard to shoot in. yes i'm a little bitter about that. but it is what it is.

i've looked at the options out there and considering that this would probably be the gun i shoot the most i figured i'd splurge and get a higher quality one. so when i stumbled on the modern sporter options from alberta tactical and saw a post or two referencing .22s i got a little confused as i thought they were .223. now after doing some research my understanding is that i can use their non restricted lower to build a .22? so it would be very similar to turning an ar15 into a .22 by building a .22 upper and just swapping it out? i'm understanding that correctly right?

if that's the case, what would you guys recommend, i've never built an ar so this is all new to me, i figured it would be a good learning experience as well as a nice end product i can take pride in. i don't really have a budget, i'm willing to spend the money knowing there are cheaper options out there but i think it would be good for me and it would be heavily used so why not. it would be primarily for fun target shooting in the back yard on my own as well as with friends. occasional squirrel, rabbit and raccoon control also. reliability is most important, then accuracy.

any help on confirmation of what i think i'm doing would be appreciated, this is all new to me. thanks!

I'm not familiar with this Modern Sporter. So, does this mean that I could buy 1 Modern Sporter lower and 2 MS upper receivers, swap all the parts from my current DPMS .22 upper, CMMG .22 upper and RRA 5.56 lower onto the new uppers & lower thus resulting in a Non-Restricted .22 that looks and functions just like my current restricted .22 cal AR-15 rifle?
If this is true I would be truly impressed.

Unfortunately.... this will not work for me (fortunately for my bank account). I just checked...the DPMS bolt cross section is a different shape and does not fit in a standard AR upper. The CMMG upper is only 25" OAL when installed on the existing lower, so would still be restricted (unless I installed a longer fixed stock to increase the OAL). Still it is good to know that this is a viable option with a longer barrelled upper that uses an AR style bolt.

You did nothing wrong, I deleted the thread due to some of the rude and hateful posts made by others.

The easiest way to make our Modern Sporter into 22LR is with a CMMG 22 LR conversion kit which consists of a bolt assembly and mag which converts 223 to 22LR.
This would give you a NR semi auto rifle that has the capability of shooting either 223 or 22LR.
The other option is to build a dedicated 22LR upper and if you wanted other calibers additional uppers in the cartridges of your choice.

Hi, I'm really excited about the MS. I'm planning on ordering 1 lower and 2 uppers next week.
I plan on making a .223 with a forward assist
and a dedicated .22lr with the other upper. Would you recommend a forward assist for the .22lr upper, or just the slick?

Thanks. Put my name on a TUF-22 from dlask months ago.

Last I checked I'm #10 on the waiting list for a Maccabee SLR, but now I have a dilemma. Should I sell that receiver when it shows up and save my .223 Wylde parts for the MS receiver instead?

Bottom line is I'll be ordering a MS regardless

Forward Assiat is for most folks a useless feature. On a 22LR it would have absolutely no value at all as it will not engage the bolt anyway. Save the $$ and go with a slick side for sure on the 22. Thankfully ATRS makes both style of uppers for this rifle.

As others have pointed out the forward assist will not engage the bolt ergo making a virtually useless feature truly a useless feature. A slick side would do the job perfectly.
