Hi guys, I just bought one of the last Winchester 70 Ultimate shadow stainless steel in Montreal in .300 WSM. Lebaron at 789.00...fairly good price...:)

I plan to use the controled round feed action as a base for a ''custom'' hunting rifle capable of a very good accuracy. Let's say 1 to 0.5 moa...

My basic idea was a Mcmillan stock, Krieger s/s barrel, pillar and glass bedding, blueprinting of the action, trigger job... With this, i think i will be covering to most important things to do, but...:confused:

The caliber would be 300 WSM (barrel twist ???)

I need your ideas and suggestions on how should i do this ''dream'' project...
If this model 70 ''pre-64'' action in stainless steel was yours, what would you do... I have to meet my gunsmith in 2 days...:confused:

Go with a 1:10 twist for your 300WSM, and grab hold of some of bulletsmith's
great 30 cal ultra low drags for it, that'll get'er done!
My barrel on my 300WSM is a Mcphee, but I have yet to wind it out ( too many other projects!)

With your intended accuracy goals, just shoot it the way it is. There is little reason why with the action properly bedded and good bullets launched, the rifle you have can't shoot MOA or better.

1/2 MOA would be very possible right now.

If you are going to all this work and expense, it better be sub 1/2 MOA consistently. I can tell you from experience and feedback from others, Krieger barrels have a nasty habit of shooting 1/2" or smaller groups at 200yds.

Ideally, the 300WSM and a 24 to 26" barrel is going to max out with 190gr bullets. I set a min of 2900fps muzzle velocity for a LR hunting rig. Regardless of bullet weight, I want impact velocity to make sure those bullets open up.

A 220gr MK at 2450fps may not open up properly as distance stretch out.

Not what you had in mind but I am selling a Krieger barreled 7RM that will do all you want and have better ballistics then the 300WSM ever could.

sounds like you're on the right track


Id put a 27" heavy barrel (not too heavy) and bed it into a beefy McMillan

twist would be 1:10 to best utilize the 165 gr. - 180 gr. bullets optimum in the 300 WSM.

Yeap, Finally, i kept the original barrel (may be it will shoot good...will find out!), ordered a McMillan stock as the one on the M40. SO this way if the factory barrel isn't good, i'll put something else and have the barrel channel opened up a bit...
 
Well.... my gunsmith asked me the same question... The only reason why i went with Mcmillan, is for a possible resale in the future... But i defenitively plan to go visit Mr. Robertson, 'cause it is not too far from where i live, to see what he can do...

You know, it's a good reason to tell my wife i have to have an other one built to help our country's economy!!!
