Ok, so I've decided to step away from black guns for a while, and want to build a "sniper rifle". I want to spend around 1500 bucks, so it won't be something really flashy, but something I can piss around with and have some fun.

I can't afford to shoot/reload for 50 BMG or .338 LM so those calibers are out of the question. Maybe something in .308, 300WSM, 300win mag? It'd be nice to knock down big game too, so that kinda rules out .204, .223, .218bee, .22 hornet, .220 swift etc

If someone could direct me to which rifle, glass and rings that I should get, that'd be appreciated.

I'd say that the Savage 10 FP with the accutrigger and the Mcmillan stock is probably the best deal you could get to start with a sniper rig. It even has a detachable mag now, and you could always buy a better barrel to drop in to it later. Another good choice would be a Remmy 700, as there are millions of aftermarket parts to trick them out with.

I personally have a Savage 16 stainless, and I have a hunting barrel in 7mm WSM and a heavy .308 barrel for target shooting. I even have a .223 heavy barrel on order for it so I can do some varminting with it. I love the Savage barrel system for switching calibres.

Erik.

I'd also look at the Remington in the 5R Milspec. Little faster twist, comes with varmint stock, and better overall factory tolerance (mostly the fact that the barrel is better than normal). Probably the most accurate factory Remington, if you want a Remmy.

There is a nice 10fp Mcmillian in 308 on the EE right now for $900. Someone needs to snag that up, it would be an excellent starter precision rifle, right in with your budget too.

When I look for a scope I usually look for good eye relief, clear optics and target turrets with vertical and horizontal hash marks.

On a budget the Bushnell Elite 3200 Straight 10x is good.
I also like the Elite 4200. Don't get too crazy with crosshairs and stuff, just as long as they are thin.

TPS rings are good and are steel, Burris Tactical Rings are a good value too, but are machined aluminum.

Ken Farrell makes a good base that is steel but it sits pretty high, I like EGW bases cuz they sit nice and low, but again they are aluminum.

I think the aluminum stuff is fine, unless you are shooting a magnum.

I was looking at the
REMINGTON MOD. 700 XCR "TACTICAL LONG RANGE RIFLE" Cal. .300 Win. Mag. For tighter group, the tactical Bell & Carlson stock features a full-lenght aluminum bedding block. Beaver-tail fore-end. Fluted 26 in. barrel.

from the EE... with maybe a Tasco Super Sniper on it?

I'd also look at the Remington in the 5R Milspec. Little faster twist, comes with varmint stock, and better overall factory tolerance (mostly the fact that the barrel is better than normal). Probably the most accurate factory Remington, if you want a Remmy.

Is the 5R Milspec in stainless only? I can't find any non-stainless photos..

Would I be able to get a Mcmillian stock for it too? I can't find the rifle on Remington's site... Sorry for the dump of questions guys, just wanna make sure I get something good for my coin, especially for my first precision rig.

Yeah, the savage would be a good choice. Price is back up a bit on it now, somewhere around 12-1300 I believe, plus taxes. 1500 might do it.

Long as you don't want sites or a scope on it your good to go.

On the subject of scopes. There is a company out of the states selling Chinese imports with incredible glass. I have owned several and just love the Mueller Eradicator. People don't believe it but I have compared the glass side by side with bushnell 4200 and leupolds and it is as clear or even more. The scopes hold zero and takes the recoil from my .308 without problem. The only thing I don't like is the click adjustments are a little stiff and the edges of the glass have a little distortion at 25x power. Barely noticeable but it is there. Passes a box test with flying colors too. Best part is when the $$ was par you could get em landed in Canada for around 200$

Hi Fry I like my Remington 700 xcr in .223 and my friend has a 12 Savage in .223 they both work great to 1000y and probably the least expensive to shoot
and very pleasant to shoot. Some of others you mentioned will not work at 1000 like .204 and 218 bullets to light to make trip to 1000 and 220 has a very short barrel life just to much speed throats go out of them rather quick.
Scope is important I never try skimping there Leupold, Nightforce top notch, and the New 6500 Bushnells seems like a good one as well here is link to Remington XCR long Range Tactical 26" in 223 ,308 and 300wm there are classes for .223rem in Ont

Stay away from Tasco. Tasco and precision should never be used in the same sentance. If you have a pellet gun or a .22 that needs a scope, giver but keep it away from any nice rifle especially if you plan on putting a McMillian on it.

For that money you'll be best served with that used Savage 10 FP McMillan on the EE and top it with a 10x 3200 Bushnell for the time being. Mount that in a Nightforce +20 MOA rail and rings (available from several board sponsors btu I tend to recommend my buddy Rick at Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply) and you're off to the races. If you decide to upgrade the scope later on the 3200 will hold it's value and your setup will be ready to accept a Leupold Mark 4 or Nightforce NXS.

Manitou 210
B.S. on the 220
I shot one for a year and a half, I was the 4th owner , the gun had thousands of rounds put through it and it still 1/4 moa all day, the poor barrell life issue was something they had to deal with in the 50's with cheaper steel .... New barrells/guns are fantastic. Mine had a Douglas barrell.
