I know what I want but I don't want to pay the huge bucks for it:)
I want to build a 6.5x55 swede to shoot 120-142gr bullets
Barrel length 26"-30",Brand?Twist?
Stock? factory or aftermarket doesn't matter but needs to fit a heavy barrel.
What is the best action (strongest)? would I be safe to go with the Rem 700 action (long?short?) which action is better. Any and all help would be great.
Gunsmith? I will need the barrel and action squared. I'm hoping everything else will just fit.

let's say $1000. hoping for less
never going to happen unless you got a gunsmith in the family or a really good friend thats a gunsmith
A barrel will cost you at least $350
a stock will be for a used one about 100-200 bucks
the action if you dont have one? the price of a used gun and up to 2300 bucks
and the work on top of that
no trigger, no finish (black etc)
no rings bases scope dies
and on and on and on
GOOD LUCK

Gonna be tough, but not entirely impossible. My suggestion would be to get a gun and add to it as funds allow.

Rem 700 SPS Tactical in 243 gives you a gun that will shoot well out of the box and can be converted to a 6.5X55. Same with Savage. There are hundreds of user-changeable accessoried for both that you can add as funds allow, such as stocks. The next biggies are bedding, action truing and a new barrel. You are looking at $560 for the gunsmithing, chambering, crowning, bedding and installation, but you are looking at anywhere from $300 - $450 for a top-quality after-market barrel.

Check out Goose25's rig on this page. A rig similar to this without scope and bipod is do-able for about a grand.

You can start with a Tikka Varminter. Not sure what these costs but likely around $1000. There have been a few 260 HB's made over the years if you look around. Rem mostly but Savage did make some.

That is the only 6.5 Swede I am aware of in a HB that is a likely good shooter. Used rifles are readily available and can be had for everything from $400 to $$$$$. All about the bells and whistles you want.

If you want an accurate shooter but don't need alot of bling and can do some stock work yourself, you can EASILY build a superb rib for $1000 OR LESS (no optics).

In my sig, there are some articles that can walk you through building some LR rigs at min costs. You can also look at my project rifle on 6mmBR.com. Was more then your budget but not much. You can shave quite a bit from my price if you don't need a barrel block.

I think the best LR rig offered for dirt cheap is the Savage 110FP from Frontier Tax in 7RM. This is a heavy barrel (26", 9 twist) 26" long. Accutrigger. The plastic stock can be worked over to be very useable. I think these were being sold off for around $600.

With a bedding job and simple stock work, you can have a sub min rifle that can easily reach out to a mile.

I have been building a "tactical" rifle for years. 1--you buy the barrelled rifle action 2--you buy the stock and trigger guard 3-- you glass 4---you buy the scope 5---now I trying to decide what mount and rings to use---DD Ross, Badger etc...

choices choices

I am considering building a LR rifle on the Tikka Varmint barreled action. (I am a Sako fan, don't speak to me of Savage or Remington). I can find one each in 260 Rem and 6.5x55. Is there any reason to choose one over the other? As hunting rifles, they are equivalent. It is not an action length issue either. Just, which is easier to turn into an LR. (Don't you love the easy questions.)

LOW BUCK! I LOVE IT! Use a mauser. You should be able to find one already in 6.5x55. Try the tradex site. Put a timney target trigger on it. Most of the sporters are already drilled and tapped. Spend the money on another barrel and get it proprely fit. A glass stock for a couple hundred and a bedding job and away you go. Should be under a grand.

Hi Crout. Don't be discouraged. Many people these days are buying a Stevens 200 rifle just for the action. Then add a barrel and stock. Some leave the triggers alone. I was thinking about my own build until I came across this one at a local gun store (consigned). It is a 6.5 x 55 Mauser with a Ron Smith barrel, Timney trigger, and a B&L 36x scope, weight 20 lbs.(3 lbs of lead in the stock). Picked it up for $1500.00 tax in. I figure I got a good deal. The only thing I have done to the rifle is paint the stock. It used to be a pukey yellow/green...the same color from a seventies bathroom. MYSTICPLAYER has helped me start on a better load/powder combination. But the target pic is my starting attempt on accuracy before Mystic came to the rescue.

I'll go Swedish, so I will have all the dies and components when I trade my A-V in .270Win for an A-lV in 6.5x55 (or maybe a Lakelander).

M77, that rig is very close to what I'm trying to build. Looks like a Parker Hale target stock. Can't say that I fancy the colour, but whatever floats your boat.

crout, don't let the naysayers get you down. A lot of people seem to be convinced that an accurate rifle can't be had for less than a couple of grand.

mysticplayer has a lot of good advice, and a stevens/savage is probably the easiest rifle for you to work on yourself, don't need a gunsmith to rebarrel them.

Personally, I'm trying to do exactly the same thing as yourself, build a reasonable priced target rifle in 6.5x55. I'm going to be using a Mauser 98 action for mine. Trying to find a Parker Hale donor action as we speak. They seem to be plentiful, reasonably priced and come with decent adjustable triggers. Already have an old Parker Hale wood target stock that needs refinishing, Parker Hale target or C3 style bolt, even have an old Parker Hale bipod for it. All I really need is old PH/Midland action with floorplate and a new barrel.

Don't know what it costs to blueprint a Mauser action but it seems that everything is trued to the threads and not the receiver, with lots of jigs available to do the job at home. I'd really only need a smith to true the face of the receiver and turn the shoulders on the barrel. I think that when all is said and done I'll be under a grand since I plan to do all the refinishing, parkerising and bedding myself.
