Building a Rifle from ground up

1. Remington 700 barreled action of your choice (depends on what caliber).
2. Match grade stainless steel barrel from any number of reputable companies (Rob McLennon is Canadian).
3. Whatever stock fits you best (try HS Precision, Manners, Bell and Carlson, McMillan, etc.).
4. Trigger - Timney 510 or a Jewel are the most popular. A Bold trigger is economical as well.

This is normally a good starting point. Afterwards your budget will determine what optic and mounting system to use.

Well, you aren't building it from the ground up. You're purchasing parts to put together into your dream rifle. Nothing wrong with that whatsoever and perhaps the best way to go about it.

Warden70 gives a good starting point. The big question is how much of this work are you hiring out and how much you are going to do yourself?

Warden70's list will set you back close to $2000 depending on if you purchase used or new components. That doesn't include bases/rings/scope/labor.

Depending on the venue you plan to shoot add another $2000-$3500 on top of the base price.

Well no I'm not building it from the ground up I guess. Will be indeed buying all parts and putting together the rifle I want. This is just the early early stages of this idea won't be doing it for a bit yet just getting the ideas going seeing what all I will need and what I need to get done to be able to do this..

Share more information about what you want to do...

example - lightweight coyote rifle, small caliber, long range heavy rifle, target rifle, big caliber, bolt action, semi auto, lever????

Are you doing any of the labour?

Still not sure exactly what I want to do Guntech this is just the starting blocks on a project I would like to do soon. I am in the middle now of converting a Remington 700 Mountain SS 7mm-08 into an ultralight if possible just pretty much upgrading what I can on the SS but for this project I would like to try putting it together myself ( what I am capable of doing, will have to get smith to do the machining of parts or anything I am not capable of).

As for caliber I was thinking .270 WSM but I am open to ideas if anyone has an idea of a caliber that would be "different" . Will also be going bolt action.

Thinking on using the gun for medium game but something I could load up for big game, caribou moose etc.

So say I buy a short action receiver and want to make my rifle a .270wsm what all is needed to be done to that to make it work with this caliber.
Also is there anything special about the barrel I need to know going with the wsm instead of normal 270.

Anything here would help thanks,

Trevor.

The first thing to do is decide what you want the rifle to be and go from there. You want an action with a magnum bolt face as changing the bolt face on a Rem 700 or most other rifles is expensive and requires skills that few have, also if you get an action in 270 WSM or its family it will feed correctly without any tweaking. There are many barrel manufacturers you can choose from including some Canadian makers such as Gaiilard and Jury, the barrel type depends on what you want, eg a target rifle with a heavy barrel, a mountain rifle with as light a barrel as practical or something in between. I build my own rifles for fun but I don't kid myself that there is any economic practicality to it as you can't sell such a rifle for the cost of the parts let alone the labour it takes to make it. If your still interested its an enjoyable project to take on and can get a little addictive.

Getting the barrel from JC Custom Barrels out of Newbrunswick.

So would the standard short action remington 700 action work for a 270 wsm or would I have to get a magnum action, all I can find are long action receivers.

Remington makes some WSMs and as I mentioned a standard short action does not have the correct bolt face so you need to pursue a WSM action. One thing that I've done is buy a rifle and sell the stock , barrel and maybe the trigger if your not using it and go from there.

A cartridge that would be different would be a 284 winchester, you could use a standard short action.
