hi there how goes it?
So I'm looking to build a precision platform just for the range.
I'm in no rush to finish it but not looking to go absolutely crazy.

what I would like to know is: should I start out with a Rem 700 or Tikka T3

heres what I would like to do

300 win mag
upgrade to Krieger Barrel 1:10 twist (any suggestions will help)
Lss chassis

I know the Rem 700 has more options of accessories than the T3
right now I can get my hands on a T3 lite 300wm for about 675.00 with less than 50 round through it.

I haven't decided on glass yet.
but which of he two above have the better action and triggers to start off with.

this will be my first build, so I expect trial and error.
just want to have some fun with great looking gun that shoots well.

Thank in advance
Mike

I have both a Tikka, and Remington. I like my Tikka much better. They are fine out of the box, I'd buy it and shoot it a bunch before wasting money right off the bat on a new barrel.

Sniper is a very poor choice of words

Of course it is. He is also talking about using his limited experience to build a precision rifle on the cheap. He doesn't know any better yet and you are shifting on him over an ill advised word choice for a designated range gun. We cry about the "thought police" but happily accept the self appointed "word police".

Can I ask why people here beat ys down or try to make ya look stupid.
Besides research, I thought asking questions and trying new things was a way to learn.

Didn't even the most experienced start somewhere?
I'll never know if I dont ask.

Don't let some people on here ruin it for you. I haven't owned either action so cannot comment on that. There will be more helpful people to help you chiming in shortly

Never apologize for not being already in the know. Sniper is a "danger scary" term like rape etc. Precision rifle is the description that keeps antis from pissing themselves. A newby precision shooter building a rifle will cost more and be less effective than most off the shelf "tactical" bolt actions. Also, without a lot of trigger time you don't know what features are going to be most important to you. Buy a used Savage model 10 or 12 308 with tactical stock, glass and bed it, spend as much as you can on glass (quality used is fine) and start reloading on a small scale. Put 1K rounds down range over the next year or 2, then build/buy what you want. You will know what you want without spending a fortune on a gun no one else loves like you so your money is mostly gone if you sell it. Trust me, it's like finding a wife, you don't keep the first girlfriend forever.

Thank you.
I get the choice of words.
See . ssomethingw new I learned.
So the T3 300wm is not good if I left it stock?
BTW, I shoot every week with my pistols large anount of rounds.
I also do most work on my guns unless its a mandatory gunsmith job (something I know I cant do).
Also, I do all my reloading for 40s&w, 9mm, 45acp, 38spl and 357mag.
Thousands of rounds
Not new to shooting just looking to get into some rifle.
I dont mind the big bang from 300wm.
Im in no rush to build the "precision" rifle.
I have no prob putting 2-3k rounds through before upgrades.
SoTikka T3 300wm not good to do it with.
Again...thank you so much

One thing you should consider is barrel life. For example a 300 win mag barrel life is 1000 to 1500 rounds . A 308 win has a barrel life of 5000 or more rounds.
Oh by the way I wasn't trying to be ignorant or arrogant to you in my first post about the word snipper I was just trying to help you out. You can change your heading in the original post , all you have to do is click on edit and then click on go addvanced and then it will let you change the tittle of the thread.

I didn't think you were actually being arrogant, I was just getting my point across before the flamers started up on me.
I know words can be interpreted in many ways and I guess with all the bad hype about firearms "sniper" may have been wrong choice.

ok back to the issue of barrel life.
I se your point.
Only thing is I do like shooting the mag calibres, I have shot rifles many times just never got into them.
If the idea is to sot the snot out f to determine what I have, then decide on my upgrades, Then I already have the action I want.
Barrels can be replaced.
Now this could be the newbie in me reasoning like this, but if I shoot 308 and later figure out what I want into a build and decide the 300, then I will have to purchase a 300wm.
Does that not make sense?
IDK enlighten me.
Like I said I'm absorbing all this.
good info here!!!!

Nothing wrong with a Tika. My experience is that for precision shooting a dedicated tactical stock helps a lot. If your budget isn't a big concern then many of my cautions are not applicable. Buying is almost always less expensive than building, especially used since most owners shoot fewer rounds than they expect.

Since you are in Hamilton, there is a 300m DND range just up the QEW at Winona. Range is not templated for 300WM but is templated for .308Win.
Barrel life, cost of extra powder and recoil are the reasons to stay away from a .300WM for range use.

I agree with the smaller caliber thing. If I put 12-15 rounds through my .338 win mag or .375 h&h I have a headache and my day is over, but I can shoot my 6.5 creedmoor all day.

I personally love my tikka. It's a short action though in a tac 21 chassis. If your open to ideas you may want to wait a bit and look at the new savage 110 stealth. There in a mdt chassis and you can get the in 300WM. Gives you about what you want in a factory package.

I own both and think the tikka is nicer. Very smooth. Barrels are pretty much barrels although you can get prefit rem 700 barrels that use a barrel nut if you want to do that at home. You can order a prefit barrel which is contoured and chambered then change it yourself. As far as I know this is not an option on the tikka right now.

Tikka t3 is also a long action regardless of caliber. There is just a bolt stop to keep the bolt from going all the way back. Different mags as well with spacer blocks.
