well I was going to build an m4 platform with a norinco m4 10.5, but a buddy of mine offered to build me one as he is a weapons tech and he was told its decently cheap if you build an AR from scratch, is this true, and if so how do I go about building an AR from scratch

thanks

Mike

The build can be as cost efficient or as pricey as your pocketbook/better-half will allow. Really depends on what tier level of manufacturers you want to use for the build (if you believe that stuff).

I've always believed in purchasing quality parts that are known to work reliably (Track Bikes/DSLR Gear/Archery etc..). Mostly for peace of mind on my part but also to eliminate second guesses once built and if problems arise. YMM in that regard, however it's always worked for me.

If you use the search function and type in "AR Build", that should give you a cost perspective. I've seen as low as $1500 up to $4000, dependant again on parts/manufacturers. Also utilise the Sponsors & EE on here as you'll find most of what you will need through those venues. If your Techie has access to parts so much the better for you.

Good luck on deciding

I bought my first ar15 complete factory original and I'm very happy with it.

I just bought Another lower for my first build. You don't need to be weapon tech to buil AR..... You can found everything on internet.

I don't build my next AR to save money, but for the fun of it. I don't think you 'll save a lot of money by purchasing parts everywhere and put it together yourself, but it's fun to look for the exact piece that you want on your AR and order it.

If ir's your first AR, i strongly suggest that you buy à complete rifle from a respectable compagny.

one does not build an AR to save money. pick a price you are willing to spend and select a manufacturer that matches that price.

1500 is out of my league unfortunately, i guess the norc m4 is my best bet what would be recommended upgrades for a stock norc

thanks for the advice

I've been building AR's for the last 17 years and the cheapest you can build an AR for is around $850. Depends on the deals you find, but around there, for price. Yes people that's nonNorinco. Not to say there is anything wrong with Norinco, either. It helps to know all the true ins and outs of the parts distributors. Here is one that will free all of your minds. I've been buying parts for AR's from Brownells.com. for years. When you can buy a BCM Gunfighter Charging handle for $47 there as apposed to almost $70 here or a Magpul CTR for $77 as to $119, you start to save money. It's not hard to order from them. There are some catches, but you follow the rules and you can get mostly everything you want. I believe I noticed at Freedom Ventures they have STI Lowers stripped on for $125. Add that and a lower parts Kit from Brownells at $54 and a commercial tube $18.18, castle nut $4, a buffer for $12, a mainspring for $5 and an end plate for $6. It looks pretty cheap, doesn't it? If you want to have it all in one package SFRC has a carbine stock completion kit for $59.
It's all about looking around to what is available and not accepting the first thing you see.

The most impressed I've been lately is the NEA Barrels, lower receivers, lowpro gas blocks etc. Those folks bring the prices down all over. It seems strange that after NEA brought out their polygonal rifling barrels, I notice Noveske has now included polygonal barrels with their high end rifles. Hmmmm?

Biggest problem is people don't like to look very deeply into something. Look deep and ask alot of questions and don't accept one persons opinion. Go with the facts you provide for yourself.

My suggestion is to not just believe the first person says it can't be done and actually look around and see what's out there. There is alot of know it all. It's always best to check it out for yourself. I try to share as much info with AR builders as I can. If your not careful, you'll be spending way to much money on something that's so so or way too much money on something that's cool.

you should look into the Core15 M4 rifles...they go for $1099 and it comes with lifetime warranty. I have one of the m4 rifles...it is very nice.
A couple of dealers sell the Core15 rifles..but wanstall in maple ridge, BC is the official dealer for them in Canada.
Also you can find NEA M4 rifle for $1099 as well...
