ok so I want to get started in 3 gun, Ive already got my pistol (sig 226) and i think I'm going with some form of the mossberg 500 12ga. my difficulty is with a semi auto rifle I'm having the argument of do i build/by a gun specifically for 3 gun (not hard for me to build or buy as i usually shoot irons and avoid adding weight) or do I do my normal approach of finding a rifle i can also use to hunt/ fun-shoot..... right now I am a student so cost is a factor..... my top choices if i buy a new rifle are a Norinco/Polytech m305, T97, an AR15 (not sure of brand), buy an sks and buy sp. ammo, or the only semi auto rifle i currently own is my svt-40, which if i can find lead core for i could use but due to cost of mags id be stuck with stripper-clip loading.... any other cost effective options or thought on my current list?

M305- expensive to feed
T97- not very competitive being a bullpup
Sks- expensive to feed with lead ammo
Ar- ideal platform all around. May want to consider if you'll eventually be competing in the states as that may change the ar you get.

If you haven't got a shotgun yet and like the mossberg platform, take a look at the 930. If you learn to load it, the extra capacity of a pump doesn't even come close to being an advantage.

This is just my .02 of course.

Yes the AR is by fare the better platform for compition, it's speed ergonomics are unmatched. Check some of the recent deals on Irunguns. For about the same price you can get an American made AR instead of a Chinese one.

I would also look into a Remington Versamax semi auto shotgun. It's chambered for up to 3 1/2" shells so it will legally take seven 2 3/4" shells in the mag, one on the lifter, and one in the chamber. Legally staring a stage with 9 rounds in a semi...

I would definitely go with an AR. It is hard to resist some of the prices out there right now. I am also partial to the 870 over the Mossberg but that is because of familiarity. I've been using the Versamax and it is awesome. When you are ready to upgrade after paying for tuition and books, I would consider this.

I'd recommend looking at the MKA1919 shotgun. Bigger mags if you go stateside, and "sorta" AR-15 ergonomics. It's giving the Saiga a bit of a run in the States for 3-Gun.

TV-PressPass has been using one for the last while I believe.

If you're near Peace River, we have our team match Oct. 4/5. It's a great opportunity to see what folks are running, from sub-$1k to $5k+ setups.

Where...?

Other than TVPP's I've never seen one at any US 3-gun

Look in the saiga forumns,

google for a bit and it's there. There's a couple companies who are basically "all in".

"Tooth and Nail" and "Firebird" etc. Happy viewing

They may be all in, and I believe Firebird is now even making one from scratch vs modifying the Akdal, but just like 667 I've never seen one at an actual 3gun match.
We've been to a few.

All the open shooters I've spoken to say they kick like a mule, and any early adopters have given up on them.
They stick to the Saiga or run an xrail on their M2.
Even the Saiga guys I know are looking to get rid of them and move to the Xrail, due to the Voodoo required to keep a Saiga running with any sort of reliability.

Sorry for the thread drift JACKSONLEWISOFCANADA.

Before you buy, see if there is any way to try a few of everything out by going to a few matches or hitting the range.

Seeing as cost is a factor, I would start with what you have even if it isn't as competitive as the "best" equipment out there.
Once you get a feel for what you actually need, you will be in a better position to actually buy and save money vs experimenting with equipment that you will end up ditching.

An AR15 is a very easy platform to learn and is easy to customize to your needs down the road (its like lego)
Use your Sig for the pistol until you feel you need something different
For shotgun, if you are going to go pump, I would get a Benelli Nova. You can probably find a used one for $400 and a new one for maybe $100-150 more, and it is a quality gun.
Huge loading port and simple controls.
For a semi, the Benellis are the most widely used for a reason, but cost is a factor there.
The Versamax is a decent gun, and the Stoeger M3000/M3500 has been proving itself as a good "entry level" gun in the US.

The best advice I can give though, go to a few matches and see what people are running, and ask questions.
Shooters are typically attention whores and if you admire their equipment, they will more than gladly tell you more than you wanted to know about it.

Thanks for the recommendations..... only reason i put out those firearms was i like multipurpose as while I'm in school it could give me more that 1 use out of a gun e.g. hunting and sport

If firebird is all in, I think they are going to have to dig deeper and double down....I shot their new semi in new mexico and its still a long way off

Well if you know of anybody selling (preferably Canada), I'd like to add another one to the group.
