Building my own gun?

Hello all you gunsmiths!

:redface: Well I have the access to lathe and drill here, so I'm just curious if I want to build my own bolt action rifle, how to start with it? What type of material and parts should I use? And where can I buy these things? I think this must be a very interesting thing to do.

Well,
I may be a little off as I havent built one but...

If you plan to build a firearm, and you haven't had much expierence in this area (gear, design, etc), I would suggest you start with something very simple.

Now, If you are talking about useing some bought parts with a home made frame, the situation may be different.

But, I would suggest you build a simple, single shot type gun first, with a relatively small calibre (probably .22), do you can get the hang of it and find things you like and don't like.

I would have to say most gunsmiths do not manufacture actions... they usually "build" a rifle by carefully fitting barrel blanks onto existing actions and fitting that into a stock.

What is it you specifically want to do?... actually make the action itself?

:p well, making the action itself must be tough! what if I start from bootlegging another gun? I know that must sound funny. But of course I wont get the barrel from homedepot or rona something like that.:rolleyes:

Honestly I've never touched any serious tools in my life. Buying some parts and building some others might be a good idea.

To experiment, you could makea simple design like this.

I just drew it up. Its a pretty simple single shot .22. Basically, a piece of tubing with a simple cocking piece. The bolt would rotate to lock in place, so it wouldn't blow back. Basically, the bolt would pull back and #### the striker, a round could be inserted, and the bolt closed.

Oh, the barrel looks a bit short but that's just because I didn't want to make the pic huge. Something like this could be a simple survival gun too.

The pic is a little unclear due to compression...the trigger piece and sear are not connected as it may appear, I'm sure you can tell where it should be seperated.
The only tools that would be required for this would be a drill press, a bunch of metal files, a saw (to cut out the trigger and sear), and a welder. Pretty much the contents of a regular shop.
 
One time when I was shooting at the free range by Homestead an older gentleman came by with an unusual, but well made looking rifle. When he didn't look busy, I went over and introduced myself. Turns out it was a gun that he had made. And I mean made. He made the barrel, receiver, bolt, stock, etc. He made it all. He even went into detail as to how he made the tool that he used to make the rifling.

I have rarely been so impressed with a rifle in all of my life.
