building rifle

First thing to start with is ask the question

"What do I want to do with this rifle?"

Then you can select what barrel and calibre you want.

Do I want open sights, scope or both?

Trigger will come into play with all of these questions.

What type of stock do I want?

"...thinking of building my own rifle..." Start by reading every gunsmithing book you can. You might find some in your local public library. Your local gun shop or Amazon otherwise. Gun shows are usually good places to find books too.
If you're planning on doing all the work yourself, you'll be needing some tools. None of which are exactly cheap. A barrel vise with bushings runs $299.97US from Brownell's. $64.04US for a generic action wrench. A large ring Mauser action wrench runs $109.97US. And you'll need headspace guages. $25 or $30 USD each. You'll need the whole set. About $450US with the generic wrench, so far.
Gets expensive for a one time build. Most builders have the barrel installed by a smithy and do the rest themselves. Stock fitting, trigger installation, etc.

well I was thinking 300 Win Mag...and it will be for long range percision...I know the mauser is a longer action but will it be strong enough and be big enough for 300 Win Mag? and most of the stuff I will be doing myself except I will get a smith to put a barrel on for me...I know its going to take awhile...but it will be well worth it in the end...

Which Mauser? The bolt face may need some work for a .300 Mag. And the bolt handle may need to be modified to clear a scope.
Here's a good site for Mausers. Covers a lot of stuff you'll need to know about. There's a forum too. http://www.mausercentral.com/index.htm
On page 27 of the 'Viewers Gun Gallery', there's a K98 chambered in .300 Win Mag. There are other rifles in bigger cartridges too. .338 Win Mag, .375 H&H, etc.

This sounds like a project that you want to do for the sake of doing it. From a financial point of view, you may find that the finished rifle is worth less than the total of the parts and labour that have gone into it.
You don't mention what sort of Mauser action you have. It may or may not be suitable for conversion to a belted magnum. In addition to the boltface, the magazine will need to be reworked. The bolt handle and safety will need to be altered if you are going to install a scope. The action will have to be drilled and tapped for sight mounting. You may or may not be satisfied with the issue trigger.

The 98K is a good strong action. At one time you could get them very cheap and everybody was building rifles on them. This is good for you as there is a lot of information in books and on the net about how to doing this. There is also a lots of custom parts and jigs available for the 98 customiser. Brownell's is both a good source parts and information. The following link is to their "how to section"

for some long range precision why not a 6.5-06. No need to modify the bolt face on your gun, it will feed out of the magazine with no mods either. Performance wise it is up there with 264 win mag/ components are areadily available, and stick on a 1 in 10" barrel, you are off to the races.

hummmmm $75 bux for a K98, $100 to drill and tap for scope, $150 to TIG on a new bolt handle, $100 for a new trigger ??????? You can buy a good comercial action for less than that. Rod
