Yes another one. I've just been missing the banter, and thought its a good time to get some opinions going again.

My question: What importance does the action have in regard to a build. I've always liked the of left port right bolt option, but other then that, once the hunk of metal is handed over to the gunsmith to install, He is the one putting all the pieces together. To me i dont see any difference in buying a factory barreled action, and, using the factory barrel as a spare. As an alternative to spending $1500-2000 on a quality action. Please school away, I'm looking forward to hearing everyones opinions.

About my build: My collection is in need of a boomer, so something 30 cal and up, will be mainly off the bench. budget is too be determined.

An expensive quality action has tighter tolerances and is machined to a higher spec. Threads are cut straight, bolt lugs will lock up across the whole lug, etc.

Most people, including myself, will use a commercially available action like a Rem 700, and then ditch the factory barrel and have the action true'd up.

The tolerances wont be as tight as a full custom action but everything else should be pretty much in alignment.

FWIW - 99.99% of remington factory barrels are "average" shooters at best.

I was gonna buy a rem 700 action($550+ taxes). Then get it worked on by a smith($350 +) . About a $1000 for a half decent 700 action. I decided to spend another $300+ and buy a stiller, I was told that is a way better option. Will I be able to tell the difference ? Who knows , maybe , maybe not. But if the gun is not accurate then I'll know it's probably my shooting ability not the gun.

This is exactly where I was a month ago. Also decided to spend a little more for a stiller TAC300 that came with a 20moa pinned rail and heavy pinned recoil lug all for under 1400. After adding both the extras to a trued Remy I'd be looking at over 1000 easy. I'm very happy with my decision, Stiller is some of the best value to dollar you'll find.

I ordered the tac30. What's the diff between the 30 and 300?

If you want a LP/RB action, the only factory action I am aware of is by Savage. If you get the Savage target rifle, a prefit would do all that you would want and that is a simple install which you can do yourself.

So what you are asking is easily achieved.

If you are going to buy a Savage, strip out all the parts and then rebarrel, restock, change the trigger THEN the cost difference is very small between going this route and a better quality action.

Will there be any/much accuracy difference between a Savage target action and a rem style custom? No... at least down to the 1/4 min range.

Are there difference in handling and "curb" appeal? That is entirely up to you and your tastes.

When an action is set up to lock up properly, the what and how isn't important. And when you get an action to work properly, the barrel becomes the deciding factor.

At least in the type of shooting you want to do.
