Building your own data book

Hi all,

After a few mis-starts with all-in-one data books bought from various places over the years (Sinclair, etc) I've decided to build my own based on my own requirements. I've done some stuff in Excel and I'm trying to find other examples of data books out there. One which was useful has been http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/Recreation/AMA/SniperLogBook20081217.pdf though it is almost a decade old. Are there any types of pages that you find useful? What about building the actual book itself? I've looked at the standard data log covers and binders, but that means finding a way to cut the smaller sheets and a hole punch which is compatible with the binder. Any tips about what to look for or avoid? I'd like to avoid buying a cover/binder combo only to find out that finding a hole punch isn't easy.

I use the Rite In Rain #373 spiral note book in one of the Data book covers we make. These data books will also fit the U.S. Tactical Supply Spiral wound Data Book.

I get a Rite In Rain 980T notebook and cover for every precision rifle I own. Multiple notebooks and a single cover for rifles with more than one barrel. The cover holds a pen and pencil, dope cards, spare battery for kestrel and lrf and some tools (allen keys for that rifle's scope turrets, dime and loop of string to disassemble the bolt). In the front of the notebook I have a section where I note muzzle velocities measured, temp and date. In the back I log shot count by date and note when the rifle gets cleaned. For day to day I note the location, weather conditions, DA, temp, BP and time as well as what I was doing be it drills or load testing, what range(s) I was shooting at and the corresponding dope and whether or not the dope was correct.
 
got some at gongjoe dot com, search for shooting log or "journal de tir" in french... Not write in the rain paper, but uch cheaper and built for good data acquisition!

If you don't need a weather proof book (I mostly shoot from a covered range building), a simple small three ring binder, some paper, dividers and plastic transparent sleeves/sheet protectors will do (you can use markers or wax pencil on these and later transfer the info to a more legible format). All can be had on Amazon.ca for about $35 to your door. I made my own load data, grouping results, optics adjustments, etc, templates.
