Bulge in case

Dose it fit in the chamber? I take my barrel out of my CZ and test fit my 9mm's. My brass also has a bit of a buldge. Meaning it is not perfect like the factor brass. It shoots fine and the buldge is gone after firing ;)

I usually don't care enough about one pistol cartridge to make a post on the internet.

Most carbide dies deliberately undersize the case body. When loaded, the resulting round looks somewhat like an old fashioned Coke bottle. The undersized middle section of the case helps to resist the bullet being driven deeper into the case during feeding.

Mine had a buldge really bad and i backed the die off a bit and screwed in the seater so that i would have the correct oal. it eventually all fit but i still have a slight buldge.

what are you using for materials? bullet weight, powder and weight.. ?

I have got the size/length right but there is a bit of a bulge in the middle of the case. Around where the butt of the bullet is sitting . Looks like too much pressure in the seating. Also the bullet is a little loose. I can turn the bullet around in the case . Any ideas how I can rectify this problem ? Don't worry I am setting up these die's for the first time .

How do you know your length is correct --each gun is different and each bullet you use will need to be set to a different length
for example one 200g rcbs cast bullet i use length is a lot shorter than a 200g wolf bullet
my bullet set up is 1.184 yours could be more or less
what fits in your magazine could be the max length

max length with bullet is 1.275 ( from book)

to set it up you need to seat in one operation
and put a 0.010 thou crimp in second operation

bullet should not be able to turn with your fingers if they are this loose and get pushed back when you are shooting you are in trouble

Bullet weight is 230 R.N. Range brass . No powder or primer in right now, but I will use Red Dot powder , and CCI 300 primers .
Max length of this bullet is 2.261 .

While I'm assuming that you mean 1.261, you might want to load a bit shorter. If the bullet has a raised collar, load it so that it sits near flush with the case mouth. Leaving a slight lead collar can work, but depending oon the throat in your barrel, might cause some sticking of loaded rounds.

Your mags will likely work with ammo loaded out to 1.275, you will probably find loading closer to 1.250 may work better.

Hello fellow GunNutz, I have just started to reload .45 ACP, I am using RCBS TC Carb set. I have got the size/length right but there is a bit of a bulge in the middle of the case. What kind of loader are you using? The bullet should not be loose in the cartridge, if it is the expanding die is too large in diameter or the bullets are too small.

What bullet are you loading? Lead, jacketed, plated?

Depending on the brand of sizer die it is normal for the case to bulge slightly when seating a long shank bullet. Again, what bullet are you loading?

I am using a Custom made Bullet , sold by Reliable Gun & Tackle here in Vancouver . I looked back on some that I had seated earlier, and one that measures around 1.250 looks perfect . I will go back and recreate that one again, and everything should be fine .

Most likely the bulge you refer to is caused when the base of the bullet is not centered perfectly as it entered the case mouth. As the bullet was seated it was pushed slightly to one side of the case resulting in a bulge to one side. While the bulge is not particularly pleasing to the eye, it poses no hazard provided the round chambers. If the bulge is bad enough to prevent the gun from cycling, a Lee Factory Crimp die will iron it out.

It'll stop the bullet from turning in the case too....:) BTW are you sure your crimp die is set up properly? Did you mic a bullet to see what the actual diameter is?
