Alright, who has had first hand knowledge of a bulged barrel caused by an obstruction? Meaning it happened to one of your rifles.

Edit to invite you to tell your story.:)

Yes, bought & installed a used barrel... Put a cleaning rod through it and noticed the rod "slipped" through easier at the end of the barrel...

Quickly found out that the barrel was bulged...

No idea how it happened... Snow? Twig... Not sure...

Had the barrel counterbored and eventually sold the rifle...

Cheers
Jay

Joe,

I have personally seen 2 bulged barrels, but you do not offer this option on your poll?

I have also seen a gun barrel that "bananna'd" from being shot with an obstruction in it, probably snow but no proof other than hunting in snow with no muzzle protection. Mythbusters "busted" the bannana barrel myth, but it has been captured on video in a hunting situation. I don't care how rare it is, all of my guns are custom rigs and a simple piece of electrical tape is real cheap insurance! Take a look.....

Happened to my cousin, finding a replacement barrel wasn't all that easy in his case either.

Not doubting your story, but I was hoping I wouldn't get to many "cousin" stories. If you vote it happened to me, we get one incident representing two gun owners.

I guess I didn't create a good poll......

Yes but have any of those guns belonged to you? One damaged gun can be seen by a lot of people. That does not give a true representation of occurance though. I am not saying bulging/bananaing does not happen. I'm merely conducting research.;)

The two barrels I looked at that were bulged it was clearly evident. Both at the muzzle end. I never did claim they belonged to me. It would never (hopefully) happen to me as I always tape the muzle of my gun when I am in the field.....

You better be ready to put up a "poll" to ask what humble pie tastes like as well:D

So are you the single vote in the pine needle catagory?:D;)

I'll have you know I've eaten tons of humble pie.......;)

Happened to a buddy with his Ruger #1 7x57.

It is now a rare custom barreled Ruger #1 in 303 British!

I have two "Bulged barrel" experiences. One was a 22 semi auto Mossberg that I personally owned for 7 or 8 years. I do not know how it happened, but I do know the bulge was not originally in the barrel. I was shooting one day and noticed that it had lost a fair bit of it's normal accuracy. Thinking it just needed a good cleaning, I set it up and ran a patch through the bore. About 3" from the muzzle, I noted the dreaded "slip" of the patch [patch moved considerably easier in one area.] Another patch verified the condition. When I looked carefully down the outside of the barrel, the bulge was visible there as well. I clipped the barrel off right in the middle of the bulge, and found I could insert a 22 short, case and all into that part of the barrel. What sort of obstruction was there when it was shot, I do not know, but it ruined a very fine shooting rimfire. Second case I inherited. Took a M17 Enfield 30-06 in trade for a couple of snow tires. Original owner said it was a lousy shooter. Cleaning it up before shooting revealed a bulge right at the end of the barrel for about the last 1½". Closer inspection revealed a small hairline crack right at the muzzle as well. Took it to my 'smith, and had him lop 2½" off the barrel and recrown it. Shot great. Probably fired with snow or possibly mud in the barrel. Regards, Eagleye.

I had it happen to me with a 12 guage side by side.
Being quite a bit younger at the time, I liked to trip both triggers.
One time, the recoil didn't seem quite as hard. I payed no mind to it. The next shot in the right barrel was incredibly loud, with about as much recoil as a double trip.
That's when I saw the bulge just forward of the forearm.
I suspect that when I tripped both barrels, one cartridge had just a primer in it (Old Cannuck brand shotshells) The wad, remained in the barrel, the shot rolled out un-noticed as I walked along the fence row.
When I fired, the wad was an obstruction.

While hunting with my '94 Winchester, I have unloaded to find a 2" stick had slid all the way back to the chamber, and slid out behind the cartridge when I unloaded. No incident that time, I consider myself lucky.

I don't doubt anyones stories, but I have seen a number of buldged barrels, buldged two myself,...

16 gauge 311A SxS. Almost exactly half way up the barrels.
Stuck wad from swollen shells.

12 gauge singleshot Baikal. Water froze in the barrel from ocean spray and snow, 3 inch Black Arrow (cheap shells from a few years back) Swell was 3 inches from the end.

I had gunsmiths work on both barrels. Nothing could be done with the Baikal so I had it cut. The 16 gauge was heated and pounded, it made little difference, but the gunsmith said it did. I have used the gun a hundreds times since without issue. The buldge is very obvious and easily seen from 5 feet away.

I've seen one muzzle loader split from half way back the barrel. I know little about ML's but the guy who shot it said there was a double charge from hunting earlier (?) Whatever it was he had trouble hearing for about 2 weeks and took a real shake from it. He had to go to the doctor to see if he had some kind of percussion injury, again I don't know much about ML's.

I have never seen a buldged rifle, only shotguns. I have witnessed 2 split rifles, and I don't know why it happened, but I know each time they kicked like a horse,

As for shotguns, if you can swell a double barrel within a few inches of the forcing cone, then you really were lucky not be injured. I have seen one gun that this happened with. Belgian 10 gauge sal####er huntung. Pop pulled both barrels and both were obstructed.

These all could very very easily have been avoided by looking down the barrel first. But in the field, I check my barrel now and then or if I fall in the mud or something, but not after each shot

Most obstructions I have heard of and seen and was the case with me and Pop and Dad, were poor storage of Cardboard shells (damp hull of the boat)
I have a swollen 12 gauge shell that now fits in my 10 gauge.

it happen to me at an IPSC match at the old Edmonton Firing Line. I had a misfire, racked the round out and thought that came out awful easy but then reasoned that i had a person who i thought was an experience RO so i doubled tapped the target and there were three holes on the paper.

"...what humble pie tastes like..." Tastes like chicken just like everything else.
Had a .45 pistol barrel bulge with some stupidly loaded ammo. Didn't take the time to check the cases.

When I was running my business, I saw a lot of bulged barrels. Sometimes ringed, sometimes cracked, split, or in pieces.
