This is a very interesting read. Steel cased ammo did not fare well at all and the barrel wear was amazing given these are chrome-lined barrels.

It was not an issue of steel cases. The big issue was a copper jacket/lead core bullet vs bullets with steel jackets.

The steel bullet wore out the barrels in only 5000 rounds. they became smooth bores. 10,000 rounds of federal conventional bullets did not wear out the barrel. It still had rifling and would group ok.

But, in an AR15, changing a barrel after 5,000 rounds is easy and cheap, so shooting cheap ammo still is cheaper. Just one more thing to be aware of.

I found it interesting that it was a good idea to replace some small cheap parts on the rifle after 5,000 rounds. I might be approaching that mark with my AR.

steel cased ammo was easier to write :0

I think it was an interesting experiment but the fact is they baked these guns getting them super hot. I think the only thing they proved was the reliability of one verses the other. Those bores are cooked, rifling or not. I think it proved the ammo you want to take to war has copper jacketed bullets, not steel.

Your inexperience speaks volumes. The best bullet is the one that penetrates the furthest, without coming apart. Don't believe the crap you see on TV where a fellow gets shot through the thigh or shoulder and keeps on fighting.

It just doesn't happen, unless the individual is all hopped up on some drug.

That's one of the major reasons the US went to heavier bullets and tighter twist rates. PENETRATION.
