Was at a local scrapper today and asked to see their lead stash. On top of the pile was an almost rope like length of lead but was like moss or steel wool all coiled up. Probably 10-15 lbs worth. The guy working there said it was old school stuff for doing body work on cars. Guessing it's pure lead? Whatever form the lead came in the pile it was still $1/lb so no deal there. Anyone see this type of loose lead around?

that's the stuff that I saw, I didn't take a pic of it , should have. The guy there said that a buddy of his has been buying it from them to make into pistol bullets, probably 25-30 lbs so far. He said he likes using it as it melts really fast since its so fine.

This stuff was mostly used by plumbers to seal pipes, by beating it into the gaps between the sections, and it was also used to fit up ironwork like railings and such, into stone floors or retrofits into terrazzo or cement floors before epoxies were readily available.

Pretty pure stuff, soft as it can be, to allow it to be rammed in to a pretty much solid state on install.

Handier than using a gasoline fired torch and a plumbers pot, when you didn't need all that much material or the circumstances wouldn't allow the open flame.

This form of Pb is also used by the lead burners in the nuclear industry to pack and seal around the windows of the "hot cells"....provides additional shielding from radiation. It is very pure and dense Pb
