The other day I was watching The Patriot where of course Mel Gibson symbolically melts his dead son's toy soldiers down to musket shot.

That scene always reminds me of where I first saw on TV shot being made in the field. This Walt Disney 1960 Daniel Boone scene:

Is there anybody else who saw something like this on TV or movies that opened your eyes to the possibility of making your own ammunition?

Lead toy soldiers cost to much to melt down worse the buying 30 pound weights at CT to melt down.

Lead toy soldiers used to be made by kids melting lead and pouring it into molds! Usually without supervision, because kids were not expected to be pussies as they grew up.
So, really, lead toy soldiers were just another way to cast lead.
