I would like to start casting bullets for my 45-70 guide gun and my Ruger #1 also in 45-70. Where in western Canada is the best place to buy moulds and all the other tools needed. I went to Whole sale sports in Edmonton and only found some bits and pieces, not enough to get started.

you will have trouble getting good moulds off the shelf in Canada, some outfits can order moulds in for you....lyman, RCBS, Saeco, Hoch, LBT, Rapine, Nei,Paul Jones, all make great products that stand the test of time......any Lee products that i have used(moulds) all have fallen apart, Lyman, Rcbs, or Star make great lube/sizers, you may get away with a cheap melting pot from lee but go with one with large capacity(20 lbs)(its easier to keep your alloy consistant.)

You may have to get your supplies through Wholesale Sports Mailorder. They have quite abit of stuff: melting pots, ingot molds, bullet molds, sizers and lubricators, etc. You will need a catalog to sort it all out. I cast bullets for my Guide Gun in 345gr, 405gr, Plain base and 415gr and 560gr WFN gas checked. PM me I,ll send you a sample.:shotgun:

"This is the famous 45-330 Gould Express bullet designed by John Barlow, founder of Ideal. Made for Mr. Gould, editor of Shooting and Fishing. Great reputation as a killer of large game. Superior performance in all 45 cal cartridges. (Hollow point). Top Punch #191, Item#LYM2786701."

I have been quite satisfied with my $35 .405 gr LEE RNFP mold. I have probably cast 3000 bullets with it and it is still going strong. It definitely is not going to last forever but I am sure I will get 10000 rounds before it is bagged. Then I will look for a steel mold - probably go with a Paul Jones at that point.

Oh yeah - it is also a very accurate bullet in both my Highwall and my Ruger #3.

Ditto on the Gould Hollow point, it is magic on deer, with either B.P.or smokeless, the 45/70 wouldn't be the same if not for this bullet(for me anyways)...Sometimes it's a pain to cast, (not for a beginner?)

Altaboy you can watch on e-bay and scoop moulds and accessories.
Watch what you are bidding on and KNOW what it is worth up here.
Postage can be a killer so do some emailing to the buyer before commiting to a bid if you go this way. I use the 405 in my 45-70 and it shoots like a dream.

Higginson has lee and will ship. There is a process called lee-menting that works well with all molds. I have Lee and Lyman and don't have a problem with either. If you are new to casting then a Lee won't hurt the pocketbook if you screw it up.

You can buy RCBS and Lyman moulds and other casting supplies direct from the U.S. at:

http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/

Even with exchange rate, GST and the customs $5 inspection fee, they are less expensive than buying from Lyman or Canadian sources plus you have a much better selection. Just be sure to insist that they don't ship by UPS courier. Unfortuately, UPS will charge you a phenominal and I mean outrageous brokerage fee if they are the couriers. I think MidSouth knows this as they willingly comply. Excellent company to deal with.

Be sure to try loading your cast bullets without sizing them at first. Most rifles shoot best and lead less with bullets that are a bit larger than groove diameter: 0.459 to 0.460 works great for the 45-70.
