Where can I find a good source to buy moulds for casting?
I contacted a few places in Canada but I was told it would have to be a special order and would take time to get it in.

Called epps, wholesale sports, SIR and a few others.
Im also looking for a lubrisizer as well.

Does midway USA ship to Canada? T looks like they have the moulds that im looking for.
Im not to sure if they ship.

Are there any other places that stock rifle bullet moulds in the stats that ship to Canada?

Higginson's for Lee molds.

There should be no issues with ordering molds from the US and there are even quite a few outfits that make custom molds at various prices. Have you tried the Castboolits forum?

What moulds are you looking for?

Brand, caliber, part #, grains......

Casting stuff is no problem from the US except Midway wont ship here. eBay is the best place, because we are snubbing their anti-firearms policy every time we buy firearm related accessories. Prices are pretty good there, too.

Most retailers are out of stock because the Americans are buying and hoarding everything they can get their hands on. :( I'm still waiting for RCBS to clear the back-order on a few items I ordered at Dante's.

As mentioned, Higginson has a good stock on Lee stuff. Not the greatest molds available but nice designs to the bullets.

Im looking for a mould to fit my 45-70, something between 280 to 450 grain. not looking for a specific mould.
Prefer RCBS moulds if possible, heard lots of good things about them.

I guise im looking for a source that has a reasonable amount of different moulds in stock and also stocks other items for bullet casting such as handles etc’.

I won't speak for Higginsons, but I've looked at most other places across the country. As far as having a good variety of in stock moulds, there aren't any in Canada. There are bits and pieces all over the place, but it's always hit and miss. Epps has a bunch of Lyman moulds on the shelf, but they don't know what they have there.

I went up there just browsing one day and I couldn't read the mould numbers from the other side of the counter. The girl wouldn't let me behind the counter to look, and she wouldn't take the pile they had on the shelf and set them on the counter so I said screw it and left. Too bad....I had $400.00 in cash burning a hole in my pocket that day. Just goes to show...you should screen your employee's a little better because often the dumb ones piss off customers and cost you a lot of money.

I'd suggest that you start by buying some bullets from the commercial supliers, before you spend on a mold that may or may not work well for you. If you have gone that route already...kindly disregard.:D

Pretty sure there are a couple guys on the forum that are involved. I'll let them speak up.

Reason to try different bullets is that, depending on the twist rate of your barrel, your rifle may or may not show a definite preference for a particular weight. Not much point in shooting light bullets fast, if they won't hit what you aim at.

DAGS for castpics and look at the mold reference charts for Lyman molds. Pictures, weights, and a visual of what the bullet looks like, as well as the top punch required to size them in a Lyman/Ideal lubrisizer without distortion.
Or you can buy the Lee push through sizers and pan lube the bullets. Cheap and fast enough. Uses your reloading press.

Check out the CastBoolits forum. Lots of used molds changing hands there. Buy a set of handles from Red River Rick, aka kal tool & Die, out of Winnipeg. Nicer than the Lyman handles, and cheaper.

Cheers

I think heavier cast bullets are best for the 45-70. The technicians of 125 hears ago had it figured out and pretty well adapted 405 grains. Although, we once retrieved cast bullets shot at the rifle range at an old Military Fort in Arizona. These were shot in the 1880s, from their Trapdoor Springfields. I'm pretty sure the ones we dug out were heavier than 405 grains.
If you are using a Marlin rifle, they are very tolerant of bullet weights and bullet speeds, powder charges, etc.
405 or 420 are certainly good weights.

I have tried atleast 8 different designs and weights from 250g up to 555g and have found that in my gun 535g is the one it likes. I have gotten every bullet from Ben at MT Chambers, he will go that extra mile to get you and your gun shooting.

Dont get stuck with a mold that might not work. Best to know what you want first.

Thanks Al...10% off your next order!!!! Really though, some of these .45 Molds can cost over $100 and that's alot to spend if you don't know if the gun will shoot it well, I tell folks using my bullets, what mold it came from so they can get the same mold if they want, but like I said earlier they're not cheap as I don't use Lee, and I do have some very expensive molds(Hoch) which don't shoot worth a crap in my guns!!!
