HOLY CRAP!!!!!

So I go into one of our local gun stores today to buy some 180gr Hornady bullets. I first bought these last fall at $28.00/box of 100. Then, in late November I would guess, I bought more (same store) for $32.00/box of 100.
Today, I go in and they're priced at $58.00/box of 100:eek::eek::eek::runaway::runaway::runaway:

OMG!!!! WTF????!!!! The dollar is high, lead is dropping, so what gives???
Was this a mistake in pricing, or have all of you guys noticed things had more than DOUBLED since last fall????

Are you sure that the price was for Interlocks, and not Interbonds? The bonded bulets are a bit pricier than the plain old Interlocks. Regards, Eagleye.

You know what. That's a good point. I'm going to go back and check that they weren't Interbonds. Man, I hope so!!! They were the only 180gr 308 that were on the shelf. Perhaps they were just sold out of the interlocks and in my shock I didn't read the sticker correctly. If that is the new price, I'll be working up cast loads in my 300WM and not just my hand guns and 30-30 :D

The price of bullets is still scary. Last time I looked at Hornady .30 cal. 168 grain match bullets they were over $300 per 1,000.

Who cares what the actual price of lead is? Even if they were solid lead, there would still only be 2.5 lbs of lead in that box of 180gr interlocks. Today lead closed at about $1.28USD/lb.

Do the math and blame who you want.

Okay, I'm not blaming anyone, but just for you, "I did the math". I was talking cast bullets at the last local gun show with one of the guys in the area that cast & sells cast bullets as a business sideline. His previous purchase of lead from a supplier in the mainland was roughly $1.25/lb. His last purchase, the quoted price before tax & shipping was $2.50/lb. Even before the 'new math' and the 'metric system' were brought in a few years ago, that still constitutes a substancial increase in the cost of material.
Another item that has added to some cost increases are 'little' things like a surcharge added to offset the increased costs of fuel the last couple of years. They all get passed on.

A can of pop weighs just under a pound you can still buy it for a buck, shipping included.;) And much less if you buy 12 or 24 cans at a time. Why hasn't the cost of shipping affected the price of pop?

Right off Higginson's price list:

3070 180 SP 29.67
30702 180 SST 36.88
30709 180 IB 61.00
3072 180 BTSP 31.64
3075 180 RN 29.41
3085 190 BTSP 36.01

Hey guy, couldn't tell you. All I was doing is passing on info concerning a 'possible' reason for some of the bullet price increases, as they were told to me.:) The pop thing, sorry, can't help you. I've been diagnosed as type 2 so my Dr. doesn't want me drinking the stuff.:p

I'm just not at all convinced that anything other than a modest increase in the price of bullets is anything other than gouging. :) Sure, everything has increased in cost somewhat, but for some commodities, like gasoline for instance, every excuse under the sun is used as to why the price is where it is. Now if there is even $5.00 worth of metals in that box of interlocks, and shipping doesn't affect everything across the board, as we see in the pop example, then why are bullets showing anything other than a modest price increase?

So why hasn't pop increased in price? Water is getting scarce, processed sugar must have gone up due to everything from market price of sugar beets due to farmers energy costs to trucking the sugar to the pop bottling factory, the cost of the material for that aluminum can has gone up, the energy costs of trucking the finished product to the outlet where you purchase it........... holy fack! if we apply all the excuses for other products to that lowly can of pop it would cost about $3.00 a can!

And no one would buy it. Fortunately, we have president's choice and Life brand and several other "no-name" brands to keep the big guys from giving us the "hurricane Katrina" story. Not that I would ever drink that crap.:p

What we need are more no-name bullet manufacturers.

If you take a look at the price of bullets on U.S. websites, you'll see that they've increased there, as well (though not by as much as they have in Canada). The standard explanation given is that the war in Iraq has put a strain on all bullet and component prices because it's a huge demand for the factories to meet the needs of the war.

The bullet companies are making a killing (literally and figuratively) over the demands created by the war.

Actually, it has. Most of the food wholesalers tack a fuel surcharge per delivery to each order these days....It's not much but it is there...:)

Most wholesale food has increased in price, often due to rising fuel costs. I've been watching it for the last couple of years.

Russell's has managed to hold the line (relatively) on cast lead boolits. They're $69.99 per 1000 of just about everything, including 240 grain .44's. They also ship by Greyhound, which is cheaper than Canada Post for really heavy stuff.

My point there is the cost increase due to shipping on a can of pop is neglilable in most cases.

If it used to cost $300 to fill the tank on the truck and now it Takes $400, and there are, oh, lets say 20,000 cans of pop on the truck, how much should each can increase in cost?:)

Now I know it's not exactly that simple. But the same ideas can be applied to bullets. The metals that used to cost $2.50 now cost $5.00. Or an increase of $2.50. And what can a tractor-trailer haul weight wise? 80,000lbs? Or 32,000 boxes of 180grain interlocks? ;)(hope it's coming to my house!) Now lets spread the cost of a tank of fuel over those 32,000 boxes. Hell, lets spread the cost of 10 tanks of fuel over those bullets.

Once again I have over simplified it I know, but in the end, sometimes you gotta wonder why some items increase in price so drastically and others not when the increased costs should apply equally across the board. Especially energy and transportation.

And the military angle is just another excuse I think. If the bullet manufacturers had military contracts, they could give a rat's ass about civilians and their reloading components. We wouldn't see anything until the military contracts were fulfilled.

All I've posted in this thread is just my opinion and is worth exatly that.

Same price as last year.:D
