Noob question

Would seating 7.62x54r bullets too deep cause a dangerous situation? I have about 10 rounds that are 20 thousandths too deep. Would the pressure be higher or lower than normal? The bullet is obviously behind the lands quite a bit.

Or should I just pull the rounds out a bit ? Can it be done?

cheers

My reloader was seating some 9mm too deep so I set those loads aside but mistakingly brought some of them to the range. The oal min for my load was 1.09 and my loads were 1.03. No damage luckily. Better safe than sorry and use a bullet puller.

Generally speaking pressure would be higher. If you have an inertia puller you can pull the rounds out a bit and reseat easily.

Do these pullers move the bullet out all the way or can it be adjusted so that it would just move the bullet out 1mm or so ?

cheers

They just knock the bullet right out. I guess if you master the wack you can get it to come out a bit before it comes all the way out but not precise by 1mm.

Here's what mine looks like..

I hit on the anvil of my vice and presto the bullet falls out and is held inside the hammer to be taken out along with any powder. The casing is just held by the part on the end that screws on.

If you want to partially pull with an inertia puller, just don't develop as much inertia! Seriously, just don't whack the darn thing as hard.

For 20thou, I wouldn't bother either.

is the powder compressed? can you hear it shake around inside the case? if so i'd leave it and shoot them, the jump to the lands is not that big of a deal at only 20 thou. if the powder is compressed in the case you could have a dangerous load there and in that case i'd pull them with an inertia hammer.

Really, for the little extra seating depth, don't worry. Even it were a compressed load. The big deal with excessive pressures and deeper seating is with straight walled cases, particulary pistol (9mm cases are really sensitive because of the high pressures and small case volumes) and possible rifle if you were loading a .45-70 to elephant stomping levels. For a bottle neck, don't worry.

"...can it be adjusted so that..." No, but you should have one anyway. Handy things, so they are. Sooner or later you'll seat a primer upside down.
You can tap just enough to get the bullet out farther than your OAL, then reseat though. However, as mentioned, 20 thou isn't much. Those loads while not dangerous, won't shoot the same as the rest of 'em though.

If you wish to pull it in a controlled fashion get the collet for it. Fits in your press, hand piece of kit. And I know it's not on topic, but, the ONLY style of puller that should be used for Berdan primed bullets.
