I have a Savage 12fv .243 with a 1 in 9.5 twist. Will this handle 105gr bullets or is there a better weight for this barrel?

I have found in 2 different Savage 12 FVs that they really like the Berger 95gr VLD's. The 95gr berger has a better BC than the 105 A-max, groups better than the 105's, and is able to be pushed faster.

I found with my 243 it did not like the 107 sierra`s but shot the 95 bergers very well .But even better was the 87 grain v-max`s .

If you are asking about 105grn Berger's then they have a recommended 1:8 twist as they are fairly long.

I guess I should have clearified... sorry. I was wondering about the 105 Amax. But I'm now kind of interested in the 95 Bergers mentioned before. I know where I can get some so I think I might try them... but are they strictly for target shooting?

I picked up some 95gr Hornandy SST the other day and I think I'll try them as well.

Cheers

Berger's (and many other precision bullets) are available through Sinclair.

I was surprised - they will now ship brass and bulets to Canada.

I was ordering some dies and cleaning supplies about 10 days ago and they informed me this restriction had just been lifted - so I ordered a box of bullets. I think they can ship up to 900 pieces of brass/bullets (or combination of) to Canada.

Now, we'll have to see if it actually arrives - should be here soon but still waiting.

I was shooting the 105 Berger out of a 8.5 twist 243 Ackley and it barely stabilized, I would reccomend a 1:8" twist for the 105 Bergers and the 107 Sierra.

The answer is no. I have used them to take 4 whitetail 2 of which were just over 400yards. In all of the cases I have had pass throughs with a 2.5" exit. I also had a friend shoot a mule deer buck this fall at 120 yards and he was impressed the bullet through the shoulder blade and destroyed the lungs, the bullet was found on the offside skin and weighed 49gr.

So there is expansion to the bullet then? That was the thing that I was wondering about.

And being that it reached the other side of the animal is a postive for penatration...

Thanks

So I "bit the bullet" and picked up some 95gr Berger VLD (very low drag) at the Moose Jaw gun show this weekend and man are they long.

I'm a little excited to get to the range in the near future and test them out. I will be comparing them to the Hornandy 95 grain SST. Wichever performs better will become my new heavy load for the .243.

If I can find some, I want to test the Barnes Varmint Grenade. I want to test them against the Hornandy V-Max. 65gr is currently the "go to" load over varget.

Results to come this spring.
