Newbie looking for advice on bullseye in 45acp. Loaded up 50 rounds of 5.2Grains of Bullseye behind Berry's 230Grain plated. Starting load listed in my Speer #12 is 5.2Grains with 5.7G Max. Later on I was looking at load data (same manual) for 230G HP and starting load was much lower. At first I thought the 5.2G was a misprint but Speer #11 manual is the same. Most other loadings for 230G RN seem a bit lower, did I start too high???

Note: COL is 1.260"

“Newbie looking for advice on bullseye in 45acp.” Okay, here: 230grain RN is considered typical military “ball” ammo. Sure it works well but…..
Tons of 45acp reloaders & shooters switched to a 200 grain SWC bullet. Lead or plated. The classic Camp Perry accuracy load is 4.0 grains of Bullseye powder under a 200g SWC. Proven 25 yards accurate. Add a half grain or less to almost duplicate the same accuracy out to 50 yards.

Modern Reloading by Richard LEE shows a 230g jacketed bullet using 5.0 Bullseye, while plain lead 230g uses 4.0 Bullseye. Most of my reloading manuals show 5.2 as a MAX load, with most starting as low as 3.6, but most show a starting load of 4.0. Bullseye is still a really great, hugely efficient & economical powder.

Yep, Bullseye might be an old powder but is still hard to beat for accurate target loads in most handgun calibres. High energy, works well with low charge weights, meters accurately, reasonably clean burning and not expensive as powders go. What's not to like.

my bullseye load was 200grn LSWC and 4.1 Bullseye - my action pistol ie IDPA load is same bullet with 5.6 of 231/HP-38. I use federal LPP primers as i have a lot of them.

It's one of my favorite powders for bulk pistol loading. When I found out it was over 100 years old I wasn't surprised. They nailed it considering how young the world of smokeless was at the time.
