I've had my share of optics, ACOG, Eotech, Aimpoint M series and Micros...
I prefer the Aimpoints but realized that I had picked up a Fastfire awhile ago that was to be a CQB backup to a scoped AR10. The AR10 doesn't see a lot of range time (ammo costs too much).

So, my question is anyone running one on their AR15 or similar .223/5.56 platform? Opinions?

I've had a Fastfire mounted on a Norc M14S for about 500 rounds, then moved it to a CZ858 where it lived for a fair number of rounds. It held up well, with no problems. I was using the Burris steel protective mount that just bolts onto a Picatinny rail.

If I were doing it now, I would probably go with the Fastfire II, which is supposed to be waterproof/fogproof. The Fastfire wound up on a 10/22 which I was using when I got caught in a light rain shower. It stopped working almost immediately, but after drying out for a few days with the battery removed it was fine.

The biggest downside will be the need for a riser and the lack of click adjustments. It can be annoying when trying to zero.

I had a fastfire II and it was a nice compact little sight... Well suited for a shotgun, but not ideal for a rifle past 50 yards IMHO. Make sure yours in 4moa dot, as the 8 is way too big for any kind if precision work.

I think it would be good as a canted back-up, or directly on top of a carry-handle mount. It's low-sitting and mounted on the carry-handle would be ideal.

For a small sight, they can take a good amount of abuse. I had one on the Marlin, and it was quite functional.

Thanks for the replies fellas!

Yes, the riser issue is the only major hurdle at this point as the AR it's going on is a 10.5" with a FSB. Brownells sells an elevated mount for the J-Point sight that co-witnesses with the standard A2 FSB. I'm not sure if the Fastfire and J-Point share the same mounting body type. It's a bit expensive though, coming in at over $100 USD.

EDIT: Jpoint and Fastfire have diferent mounting positions :bangHead:
Back to looking for an appropriate riser...

I have a Fastfire II set in one of the Burris protector mounts with the wings. Currently mounted on a Ruger SR22 using a YHM short riser that I ordered from Brownells. Cost was somewhere around $20. It is just slightly shorter than the FastFire itself. It elevates by 3/4". Brownells also makes a similar one that only elevates 1/2". Given that the sight alignment is the same on the SR22 as an AR, I would not want to go any lower than a 3/4" riser. Don't ask me about co-witness since I don't have irons on my SR.
