Hey guys~I'm in the midst of a varmint gun switcheroo, and am looking critically at my big Sightron SIII (6-24) wondering about scaling that back for size/weight savings. The scope itself is remarkable so I'm PROBABLY not going to change it...BUT...I have a scope/reticle stuck in my head after looking through a few Burris 3-9s with their E1 reticle. Burris makes a 4.5-14x42 scope with the same reticle, AO, and while I've never held this exact model or looked through one...I can't help but think it would be a good fit for at least one rifle I currently own. Question is this~how good are these scopes? I already have confidence in all Sightrons, so the STAC would be the other direction to look...but the clarity/reticle on those 3-9s keeps me thinking about the Burris. Nobody seems to talk about them, which is a red flag. I also don't know how good the warranty/customer support is. Not expecting Sightron SIII quality, but for light-caliber varmint guns..? Not looking for trouble, but also not looking to spend more than about $500 for this. I've owned Leupold VX3, Vortex Viper HS, and the Sightron on the upper end...so that's my frame of reference for "good" scopes.

So...avoid, explore, or go for it? :) This is the scope in question.

Appreciate the input, dealer replies welcome...CGN sponsors who might have, etc.

thanks!

I've only had the cheaper Fullfield II's and for a hunting rifle they work great. No problem with magnums or cold weather. The ballistic plex is handy if you verify its poi ahead of time.

Thanks for the input Epoxy7~sort of what I was hoping to hear. Based on the 3-9s I've looked through (indoors, @ Bass Pro~which means almost nothing) they DO look bright and crisp. I really liked the reticle too. Did you buy your 4.5-14x42 new? From what dealer?

I'm using the XTR II in the 1-8 and have no complaints. Reticle is very usable in combination with my Strelok app.

I have a 2.5-10x veracity on my 102. It’s been great. I went into wholesale for a vortex walked out with the Burris it was so much clearer and ffp for a great price.

Veracity 3-15 on a Win1885 270. Have not shot it much.

Your Sightron is super clear, so probably better at 6x than most.

My question would be on your choice of low and high magnification for your use. A 200yd coyote vs gopher is totally different at 9x, 14x, 24x.....which top mag is best.

For whatever reason, the brand just doesn't have a vibe of prestige to it, unfortunately.

When people think high end there are options like S&B, Swarovski, Zeiss, when people think decent they think Trijicon, Leupold, Vortex, etc.

I've never had a bad experience with Burris, but they're kind of like the Kraft of scopes. They're okay, but not what people think of when they think high-end.

Great question. When I had a 4-16X, I left it on 16X for both groundhogs and coyotes. (though I've yet to shoot a coyote) I usually want to be able to see my bullet holes on paper @ 100 yards, so that's a question of both good glass, and magnification. More of one requires less of the other. lol Generally speaking, I zero @ 100 yards, and seldom shoot past 200. I travel to Alberta every other year for gophers...but shoot groundhogs here all spring/summer. Guess that didn't answer the question...but between 12x-16X on the top end with decent glass~should be able to do everything I want it to.

I wish more people disliked them, so i could pick up more at a decent price.

E1's disappear off the EE faster than promises after a Liberal Politician leaves the room.

Closer to $800 for the 6500. Did you mean the 4200? I still dislike Bushnell’s reticle choices. Doa isn’t bad but I prefer a fine cross drop down style. Burris Ballistic plex is decent. Simple but it works.

I know there was s big sale on for Bushnell optics. Likely good deals then.

I did mean the 6500. Admittedly on a End Of Life scope only lives on the used market where the price can vary. So maybe I should say it is king of $500-700 scopes.

Anybody else’s sightron siii 6-24 seem super clear at 6x but not so much at 24x?

I don't know your age but much of high magnification/luminosity issues are eye related: the minimum pupil size is from 2-4mm and 4-8mm maximum pupil size and drops with age.
At 51 years old, most of my scopes have better luminosity/contrast at 80% maximum magnification which was never an issue 30 years ago :(
In perfect light conditions, this is not an issue but it does not take much to become one.

Well I had one of these and I found it not so good at high power. I’m 30 years old. The Zeiss Conquest v6 3-18 I had was super clear at higher power

I own several Burris scopes as well as Zeiss Swarovski kahles and s&b.the s&b is the nicest one of the bunch but I’ve never had a problem with a Burris and you can always find one for a good price somewhere.my only complaint is that they seem to have limited movement in the adjustments.
