just a quick question on using the inserts to add MOA for distance
when setting them up to add 20MOA incline is it
a) +20 insert in the back lower and -20 insert in the front lower
or
b) +20 insert in the back lower and zero inserts in the front

i have it set up currently like a) but after thinking i may have been adding 40MOA which would explain why i am still 6" high at 100 completly bottomed on my adjustments

As far as I know, the numbers refer to thousandths of an inch offset from dead centre. Actual shift in minutes is going to depend on ring spacing. You could measure your ring spacing, do a bit of geometry/trigonometry and calculate the resulting elevation in minutes.
Post your ring spacing, midpoint to midpoint, and give the mathematically inclined their puzzle for the day.

Terry is correct, you need to offset the amount you put in the bottom of the ring with the opposite amount in the top of the ring so you have the correct size "hole" for the scope. You can also use +10 bottom rear -10 top rear and then -10 bottom front + 10 top front for your next scope so you get more than one use from one insert kit. I have also used them to offset windage by turning them 90 deg to the side when you want to center your windage adjustments better.

I just checked the directions that came with my rings. It states to always use Inserts in sets (one "+", one "-") of the same value. One .020" offset insert marked -20 and +20 (corrects 20" @ 100 yds) values are approximate. Due to ring spacing already stated in the post above. So a +20 in the bottom of the rear ring and a -20 in the bottom of the front ring will raise your point of impact aproximately 20" @ 100 yds according to the directions with the inserts.
