Leaves are pretty well down here in Bancroft, excepting the aspens and oak trees. Was out bird hunting on the property adjacent to my cottage on Saturday, given the weather. I was with a buddy, and his very energetic young lab. Decided to split up at a fork in the trail, agreeing to return in 20 mins.
After my foray, I was making my way back to the fork, when I heard the thrashing of leaves about 100 y away. Assuming it was my buddies lab, I decided to wait and see if it could find me. To my surprise, a very large buck breaks out of the glade about 40 y away, coming straight at me at a good clip, head down. I wait until it's about about 20 ft away - then I get concerned about getting centrepunched, and yell. The animal puts on the brakes, just like in the cartoons, does a 90 degree turn, and bounds off into the bush. Very impressive to see a large, well muscled animal up close like that.
Later in the day, I was down at the other end of the lake sharing a pop with some of the local lads. After hearing the story, I was advised that I had seen the fabled "swamp buck" that has evaded their attention for several years.
