The bolt on the remington 74 and 76 series locks directly into the barrel. The rifles are THEORETICALLY safe to fire without the reciever.

Huh. So you're saying I should try firing it without the receiver just to see? Lol!

Thanks for the additional information guys. Much appreciated. Sounds like the potential issues should be repairable enough for what I need but I'll be sure to keep an eye out regardless.
