Bushmaster ACR, barrel swap, classification change?

Hey all,

If I buy a restricted ACR with the 16" barrel, then buy the 18.5" barrel separately, can I swap the barrel out making the gun a non restricted firearm and nullify the need for an ATT? will I be able to swap barrel freely between the two classifications? Will I have to inform the CFO of the change?

Thanks

You can buy it as restricted and do the conversion and verification process yourself or have a business like Herron Arms or Dlask do it for you, This would make it NR once verified and paperwork submitted. As a NR you would of course no longer need to play by the restricted rules such as transport, storage, and usage regs.

You will be free to swap out the barrels, but every time you swap them out you change the classification which MUST be reported and be properly verified/registered with in 30 days and cant be used or taken anywhere except the verifiers until the new papers arrive, even if the barrel swap is temporary, (meaning you may not take it to a CFO approved range as NR, convert to restricted while your there, and then back to NR before you leave) and the process can take weeks and becomes unpractical if you plan to swap back and forth more than once or twice a year.

Just as a note, if you're changing from restricted to restricted barrels (16" to 10") you can call yourself.

If you're going from a restricted to NON-RESTRICTED barrel (and want it to be re-classified), it MUST be done by a verifier certified by the CFO. IIRC you can change the barrel length to over 18.5" and call yourself, but it will still stay restricted unless verified.

One20ish and F22 are both correct. When I bought my ACR it came with a custom 12 inch barrel which I would have loved to keep but being non resticted was much more important to me so I emailed the RCMP firearms classification lab and asked them directly. They were very clear that once the rifle was declassified and was non restricted that a restricted length barrel could not be installed without having the rifle reclassified as restricted before firing it. As soon as the short barrel is installed you are in possession of an unregistered restricted firearm and you have 30 days to initiate the classification process, during that time you may not take it anywhere but a firearms verifier or a gunsmith.

If the rifle is restricted with a 16 inch barrel and you also had a 12 inch barrel I wouldn't bother calling in to let them know every time. I would treat it like I do my AR's and just run whatever upper I felt like that day and put the upper they think it's supposed to have on it when I put it away at the end of the day.

Anyway, don't worry about scavenging the gas system off of it for a non restricted conversion since you can't really swap back and forth legally. If you want a non restricted barrel I know a guy who can make one for you. He built my 300 blackout barrel and I'm very happy with it. The paperwork is easy and I know a certified verifier in Edmonton who can help you with that part.
I can help you with fitting the gas system to the new barrel as well.

PM me if you have any questions and check out the ACR sticky if you want to see pics of my caliber conversions I've put together for it.

Awesome stuff folks.

I was talking to one of the sales people at a local gun shop, he told me that after the rifle has been reclassified as non restricted I would then have to surrender the restricted length barrel for destruction. Is there any validity to this?

No. He's full of poo.

Keep it, sell it, do whatever you like with it.

please name the shop so nobody has the misfortune of shopping there

Oh, and they are 100% incorrect

No, I put an ACR factory barrel into an AR upper. The gas port needs to be opened up slightly though for it to cycle.

Me too, got one of the Questar take-offs? or your old ACR barrel?:p

Great barrel though besides having to open the port.

Lol, I broke 4 bits trying to get through it and I was using a drill press with the barrel in a vise and going slow. That chrome lining is tough stuff.

NEA upper/lower, ALG enhanced single stage nickel boron coated trigger, NEA BCG, AP Customs carbon fiber forend, Magpul CTR and MOE+, JP brake, YHM low profile gas block, Phase 5 EBR V2, Daniel Defense buffer tube with standard carbine spring and buffer.
It now has a BCM angled stubby foregrip and my Nightforce 3.5-15x50 with NP-R1 but the NF will be coming off after I test some more ammo in it. Not sure yet what it will get when I'm done. Thinking either a Hi-Lux CMR 1-4 or Sightron SIII 1-7, maybe my Aimpoint PRO if/when I get into 3-gun.

Nice! And mine was a PITA but not 4 bits, I used cobalt drill bits and lots of cutting oil with the barrel clamped in a friends mill (helped to centre the barrel and have it rock solid)

One drill bit to break through the crust then bore down through the steel, then the second one to cleanly cut through the bore of the gas port.

Had the Daniel defense barrel on it for a bit, but put the ACR barrel back on, it's much lighter and better for 3-gun shooting. Again, too bad there isn't more stuff open in my area, the DD barrel will I think turn into a MK-12 ish upper.

Lol, I used CanTrash titanium bits. Lucky the set I bought on sale came with about 20 of them.
That looks like an HK bipod?
Nice rifle.
