I am finally buying my first AR tomorrow. I have been researching and for the amount of money that I am able to spend have narrowed it down to two. I am thinking the Ruger SR-556 or the Bushmaster MOE. Both are the same price, so that is not an issue and are they are new. I like the feel and looks of both and the only problem I have is that the Ruger seems a bit on the heavy side, and the Bushmaster may does not have rails like the Ruger. I am not intending to deck it all out with a light, and all the other goodies. Just optics works for me. What is your opinion guys? What is the better choice? I know there is other choices , but if you had to pick out of these two which one would it be?

I'd pick the Bushmaster since I don't see the need for a piston AR, but there are better choices for around the same cash.

I know that there is definately better quality AR's on the market. I intend to buy local from the Mom & Pop shop and these I find are a couple of the better ones. I decided against Norinco and DPMS. They just did not feel right to me. They had a used Colt Ar 15 that was used by the California Highway Patrol for $2200. I would definately buy that one, but is just too pricey for me. That is why I am narrowing it down to these two rifles. It is going to be a plinker for me.

That is way too much for that rifle...especially used. Notwithstanding any recent exchange rate changes, Colt ARs have been easily found new for less than $1500. If they're your two local choices I'd get the Bushmaster for sure.

My vote is for the SR556 Ruger as I am not a really big fan of the AR platform, but that piston system actually makes it more interesting. I personally would get an XCR-L so that you could shoot it anywhere you wanted.
