i am looking to buy a scope for my dad for his b-day but i don't have an incredible budget!
I really don't know anything about scopes (never had one and just got into shooting this year)
I have seen some pretty good reviews on the bushnell elite 4200 series and found a 3-9x40mm on sale at a shop nearby for 277$
Is that a good deal?
Do you recommend that scope?
and finally a 3-9x40 would be good for what kind of ranges?

my dad will mostly hunt deer with it (he shoots open sight on a .308 and never had a scope) but i would like to know if it would be suitable for target shooting as well in the 200/600 yds range

thanks for the info

Elite 4200's are very nice. I like mine a lot. :) And yes, $277 for a 4200 is a smoking good price (enough so to make me suspect it's really a 3200 they're trying to sell you).

what about the range? i don't know if it's a stupid question but i have no idea what the numbers mean exactly so a 3-9x40mm is good for what kind of range?
i tried checking online but couldn't find anything, as i said i'm a total noob when it comes to scopes

ok i found it, it means that it magnifies about 3 times at the low end of adjustment, up to 9 times at the high end and 40mm is the diameter of the objective!
so now i just need to know if it's good enough for target shooting aswell on a 200 to 600 yds range

Alex,

First, what do you what to do with the scope?
600m is well beyond the average shooter's ability.
If it's for hunting big game, take the 3-9 magnification, it's well enough for this purpose. If it's for target shooting, you may think of a higher magnification.
When you use high mgnification, you lose lots of field width and it makes a target very hard to follow if it moves.
Keep in mind that many countries use a 9X and 10X as a sniper scope. The scope does not make a better shooter, practice does.

it will be mostly used for hunting wich i read was good enough!

the thing is i am interested in target shooting and will be using my dads rifle before i buy my own! The ranges i would have acces to in quebec go from 50yds to 600yds, but realisticly i wouldn't be shooting more than 200yds with it at first and i will eventually buy my own rifle and scope by next year

so i what i need exactly is a good hunting scope that could also allow me to shoot targets up to at least 200yds

when i will be able to do it constantly and easily i will upgrade it

A 9x zoom will make something at 900 yards appear as if it were only 100 yards away. So, at 200 yards, a 9x zoom will make the object appear as if it were 23-ish yards away (ie: very close). At 600 yards, a 9x zoom will make the object appear to be about 67-ish yards away. Most people would agree that 67-ish yards isn't too long a shot without any zoom - so yes, the 3-9 would work acceptably for target shooting in those ranges.

A 3-9 is far and away the most common scope, and for good reason - it's probably about the most versatile zoom range you can get. True, it isn't entirely ideal for long distance shooting, and neither is it ideal for 20 yard brush shooting - but it is very adequate for either task, and all points in between.

good! thanks for the info thats what i neede to know! since it will be used mostly for hunting i will go and buy it (i think it's a good deal for 277$ and i'll make sure it's a 4200)

it's just that i am interested in target shooting so it will also give me the chance to experience target shooting and if i really like it i'll buy myself a more adequate scope after

Yes, it is a REAL good deal. The 3200 3-9X40 current price in Montreal is 219.00 $, so, 277.00 $ for the 4200 is very good. Do it fast, Rudy told me they have limited quantities.

BTW there is not too many ranges over 200m in Quebec, most of them being 100m.

lol so i you know exactly where i found it! I live pretty close from Dante so i'll go and get it tonight!

thanks for the advice!

Thanks for the heads up - I bought a 4200 this morning so there's one less. I'm glad I did some comparing in Gander Mountain in Port Huron MI a few weeks ago because I thought it was the best scope by far in the $300-400US price range.

there is no 3-9 in the 4200 series...you're looking at a 3200.

This is a redesigned Bushnell Elite 4200. Of course the original 4200 has/had a 4:1 magnification ratio where the 3200 has a 3:1. One of the reason for the lower cost is that it has basically all the features of the original 4200 but without the 4:1 ratio - only 3:1 (probably a significant cost factor).

Also, the introduction of the Elite 6500 (6.5:1 ratio) with specs of 2.5-16X50 has probably a lot to do with this excellent price for the 4200. I have one bought last year (3-9X40) and had an original 4200 with a 4:1 mag ratio and liked both of them.

I also owned for a while a Burris Fullfield II also in 3-9X40 and found it to be at least as good as the 4200, if not better. See these postings as examples:

And don't forget to check out the Bushnell promotion (free digital trail camera) on their Elite scopes (might be just the 6500). I haven't checked lately so it might be over (looking seriously at the 2.5-16X50 for long range moose hunting).

The fullfield II was the one I would have recommended. 3-9x 40mm with ballistic plex.
I have one that will be going on my deer/coyote 243WSSM. The glass is very good. I really like this scope. For the money it's pretty tough to beat.

The 4200 is decent. It'll work. I just happen to really like the Burris at that level of scope.

Where is that range? Is it private? I live in Quebec and i was wondering where i could shoot targets up to 100 to 150 yards without annoying anybody.

Thanks!

they are selling the 4200's cheaper now ( in MB as well) because the new 6500's are out and are bushnell's new "flagship" scopes and if you have an SIR catalogue from last year you will see on the back cover that the 4200's did come in 3-9x40 original price for it was 349.99$ and only 1 model from what i see . you get a 1 year free trial replacement warranty as well .
