I am working on buying my first centerfire rifle, likely a Savage or Stevens in .243 Win. Uses will be range shooting (out to 350yds or so), varmits, coyotes and maybe deer.

A buddy has suggested the Bushnell Elite 3200 series as offering good value and performance. He suggests the 4-12 x 40 AO model, listed at $329.99 in the Russell's catalog. I was looking at two others as well.

3-9 x 40 listed for $214.99
3-9 x 50 listed for $269.99

I am not after the ultimate long distance rifle, just a good, solid shooter that can slay gophers out to 250yds or so and the other uses as I stated. I am a total rookie to current scopes and longer range shooting and need some help with exactly how well each scope will work for the above. Cost is an issue at the moment, so I would really like to justify the cheaper options I mentioned.

Any help and guidance appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

I would go with your buddies pick, 3200 4-12 x 40, should fit the bill in what you are looking for great. Second would be the 3-9 x 40 and would likely be enough for your needs, but if you can swing the extra $$$ for the higher magnification do it cause at 350yds it would help. The 3-9 x 50 would be my last choice as you need higher rings and I don't see that large of benefit on a 3x9.

if your going to go 4-12 you might as well go 5-15x50mm and get 3x more zoom gophers at 250yds would be pretty small me thinks.

I paid $369 for my elite 3200 5-15x50mm

I have a Bushnell 3200 5-15x on EE now for $350 + shipping, I planned on using it for 400 yards this spring but I was gifted a 6-24x!

Shameless plug. :D

Picked up a brand new Bushnell Sportsman 3-12 with illuminated reticale and inscope level ship to my door for a little under $120 and it rocks! Got to say I am really loven it!
:D

as said before you could always wait for one to pop on EE
I got a 4-16x50 AO elite 4200 for 350$$

If you aren't planning to shoot a deer you'd better off in my opinion with a 223 for coyotes and gophers, 4-12 will work, 5-15 will work better. You may want to look at the Legend series as that 5-15 is a lot less than the 3200, and for mid day shooting should work just as well. FS

Can any of you with experience tell me the real-world difference between the Elite 3200 and the Legend, especially as regards the 5-15? You can get a 5-15 mildot model in either the Elite 3200 ($386 at Higginsons) or the Legend ($207 at Higginsons).

According to the specs, the Legend is actually supposed to be fully multi-coated while the Elite 3200 is just multi-coated. Both are given similar light transmission ratings by Bushnell. So what is the real-world difference between these scopes for the purpose of varmint shooting?

This is what the Elite 3200 5-15x40mm model#32-5154T has over the Legend oh and this one has a mil-dot recticle
