Hey Guys,

I recently picked up an older Bushnell scopechief 3x9x40. I looks like an older scope made in Japan during the 80's. This particular model comes with what's called a "prismatic rangefinder"
and a "bullet drop compensator". Basically you are suppose to aim at a target and then dial in the bullet drop compensator to match the yards displayed by the rangefinder.

I was was wondering if anyone out there used one of these scopes back in the day? If so, did anyone actually rely on the rangefinder and use the dials or did you find them more of a gimmick? Anyone that actually owned one and could provide some tips or tricks it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Have several Scopechiefs and optically and mechanically they are darn good scopes in my experience. Unfortunately I have never used one equipped with BDC or the Rangefinder device

Ok thanks. Appreciate the reply. The BDC and rangefinder seem a little complicated or possibly gimmicky. But I haven't shot it yet and if it does work then it could be advantageous.

I had one for years, they were Bushnells higher end scopes back in the 60's & 70's. They were among the best back in there day.

My dad just gave me his a couple of days ago. Scopechief VI. I think it is a 4x32. Fixed magnification (no zoom). He swears by it. Shot a lot of moose with it. Its seen a lot of tough weather. Glass really clear. I ordered rings for it. Will install on my ACR just for fun....

Mechanically they were good scopes and optically fairly good for the day and not great by todays standards. Most of us considered the BDC compensator somewhat of a joke back then because ethe scopes didn't track well enough for that. When I sent my last one in because a lens had rattled loose they sent it back saying it was too old to fix. Where does the time go?
