I'm looking to buy a Remington 700 SPS in .30-06 for deer and elk hunting. How are the Bushnell Trophy 3-9x 40mm scopes? What kind of rings do you recommend? It's cheaper than other scopes but I hope its still a good scope.

Thanks, Chris.

I had one for a little while and really liked the optics for the price. Ended up selling it to a guy at work. He mounted it on his 300 Win. Mag and it has held up to the recoil so far. It’s just been a couple of years that he’s had it. I’ve used Leupold rings for most of my rifles with out any problems. Good Luck...

I've owned a couple of Trophys in the past and found them to be good scopes, but I also own a couple of 3200s and like them better. For a few more dollars the jump up to the 3200 is worth it.

For rings and bases the standard weaver bases work great. Burris Z rings are quite strong and dependable. The whole setup doesn't cost a bunch. Also the Tally Lightweights are very nice mount as well. I use both systems on my 700s.

I had a trophy on a remington sendero 7mm rem mag and I liked it. Its a good scope for the money. I do prefer the 3200, like SuperCub said for the extra money its worth it.

Thanks for the info. What I'm thinking is a Bushnell Trophy (or 3200 possibly) 3-9x 40mm with Burris Zee Rings (medium, matte) and a Weaver mount. What I'm not sure about is what mount to get. Just looking at the Wholesale Sports catalog I see the title "Weaver Top Mount Bases" and probably 200 different choices. How do I know what "type" of base to get? I just want a matte one to match my blued rifle. The types are just a "####" (pound symbol then two to three numbers and letters).

Thanks

I would strongly recommend staying away from the new Trophy's made in the Philippines, I have 2 of them and they are crap. One of them was very blurry out of the box and the point of impact moves up and down a few inches when the power adjustment ring is turned. The other one holds zero ok but the lens coatings are so poor that in bright sunlight there is a glare.

Realy they are crap, I cannot stress that enough.

The old ones made in Japan were way better and in no way (other than looks) are they the same scope as the new ones.

Has anyone else had this problem? I'm kinda scared to buy one now as I really don't want to look through a blurry scope when shooting. How are the Bushnell Legends (particularily the 3-9x 40mm)?

I'd keep an eye out in the EE for a used 3200 or similar.

I had 2 of the Legends and found them to be pretty decent for the price....but like has been said already, watch the EE,or put up a "wanted to buy" ad and include your price range:cool:

Chris I assume you are going to look through the scope before you buy it? occasionally there are some factory defects in all scopes. Trophy is an excellenent product if thats all you can afford. There are a fair number of Gunnutz that have Banners on their rifles and love them and they're less exp than Trophy.FS

I have recently looked through the trophy models and found them really clear. I have an old Bushnell Buckhorn on one of my guns and the trophy has got to be better than mine, and I have had NO problems with mine. Also Bushnell customer service is excellent they would do something for you if you are not satisfied ....and they are in Canada. I bought the Elite 3200 3x9x40 and am very happy with that as well!

On the back page of the new SIR book they have Elite 4200 Matte 3x9x40 for $350.....That is the best deal in optics IMO.

But just like stated if that is what you can afford at this time buy one, The ones I looked through had really clear lenses, and I liked them as much as higher $$$ scopes.

+1

I've had a few Bushnell Trophy scopes. I think they are a great scope for the money. But for only ~ $50 more in the used area on the EE you can get an Elite 3200... a much better scope for the money.

The Rem 700 SPS is an excellent choice as well. If it was me I opt for Weaver bases and steel Burris "Z" rings or B-Square Lynx rings.

If you go for the Weaver bases get the 40A front base... The 40A base acts as an extension base. It will give you better eye relief adjustment if you are opting for the Trophy scope as the Trophy's have a shorter length tube than the Elite series. In any case, you will need the 40A if you are trying to mount a Trophy scope on a Rem long action rifle - like the SPS in .30-06. Here's a pair of Rem 700 long actions using the Weaver 40A front base.
