Just wondering what I should put on my Savage Axis 270Win. I looked at a bunch and narrowed it down to two.
Bushnell Legend HD 4.5-14x44 mil dot
or
Vortex Crossfire II 6-18x44 bdc.
Looking for something for long range target practice 200-400M. Anyone have any opinions on either? Will they hold up to the shock of a 270Win?

Bushnells rarely break and their warranty takes care of it. Vortex breaks often and their warranty takes care of it. Both scopes have good glass but I'm betting the tried and true Bushnell would be a little better.

I'd normally say Bushnell, but the new Legend models with side focus are made in China....Crossfire is made there too btw.
Id probably tell you to jump up a level to an Elite 5-15x40 over the Legend....some people are happy with the new Legends however. I just don't think any glass made in China is worth that much $$.

I have the crossfire II 3-9x40, and I really like it. Never tried the bushnell though. My buddy from the range bought a crossfire a few weeks ago and sighted in his .308 with it and some target shooting, he liked it too. Not sure what model he got though.

i just picked up a vortex crossfire 1.5 5 32 with the bdc reticle im really liking this scope as clear as some of the lower end leupolds

I've tried many a Bushnell from cheap to their top of the line models. The same is true for the Vortex. IMHO and based on my own experience I would recommend the Vortex by far over the Bushnell.

I've had a lot of issues with the Bushnells over time and their glass, even in their "top tier" scopes IMHO is significantly less than spectacular. I have since replaced almost all my Bushnells with Vortex scopes (and WILL replace them all) and have been very happy with the results. I find the Vortex of similar "tier" to be a much better scope than its Bushnell equivalent. I have several other higher end scopes so it' s not like I am dead set on Vortex only, but I'm simply trying to compare apples to apples here and not bring in NF, S&B etc etc.

YMMV

I know you are asking about two particular scopes however in your range I would like to point out the Redfield line of optics just as a friendly suggestion.

Between the two choices IMO 6 of one , half dozen of the other, take the one that looks the best to your eyes.

In my experience, better quality with Vortex but slightly better durability with Bushnell. Would still vote for Vortex though.

I have used Leupold, Vortex, Zeiss and others. The Bushnell Elite 6500 line offers excellent Japanese scopes that have great glass, function well, are durable and stylish. A 2.5-16x50 for example is an excellent scope for the price and intended use and anybody who would say otherwise has either never owned and used one or is a complainer who had a 'rare' problem with one. For your intended use I would purchase a Bushnell over a Vortex every time.

I got 2 Vortex that broke on me. BAd zoom ring and the other one the reticle was jumping all over the place inside the tube. I have 2 Bushnells and till now everything is working perfectly. Glass quality is pretty much the same. SO basically you have more options/features for the same price with the Vortex but better reliability and durability with Bushnell and less features.

Have you tried the new Bushnell elite tactical line? They are closer to the Nightforce end than the Vortex end. They are also closer in price to the Nightforce but FAR superior to any Vortex.

How could it be better quality but less durable?

To the OP,

Bottom line is Vortex are junk, I wouldn't waste my money on something that WILL crap out on me, its not if...its when!

Ended up going with the Bushnell Legend HD 4.5-14x44 mil dot. The vortex wouldn't fit on the rifle without changing the mounts to a rail, or getting extension rings. It was too short for the existing mounts. The Bushnell was plug and play. I swapped out the rings for some Weaver rings. But now I am having trouble with the recoil moving the scope and loosening the rings. The scope was sliding in the rings and rings were coming loose on the bases. I guess I need to put more torque on the rings and maybe some locktite?

Check the torque specs on the rings, if you have a inch/lb ( or borrow one), try a little more torque on the screws and use loctite blue.

I believe my screws are torqued to 35 inch/lbs. on the rings, NOT FT/LBS!! Good choice on scope, opinions aside, they have some of the best glass on the market for clarity and lack of distortion around the edges.

Depends what line you are comparing. Lower end lines are not even close to higher end ones within the same brand. Vortex's Viper (especially the PST) offers some damn good quality and features, and at a reasonable price to boot. I like their stuff a lot.
