Cranky Pants
CGN Ultra frequent flyer
Headed out for a little hunt this morning. Fresh tracks at the start of the road I hunt so I called my way in. Stopping every 500 yds or so but nothing came.
Couple km back I had a baitsicle 250 yd down a hill so I parked on the backside and snuck over, ravens and Bald Eagle at the bait so that's a good sign. Got set up with the .223 and cranked the scope to 12X. I wasn't calling here but there was a little clearing below me maybe 30 yds down on one side of the road. 20 mins later this big yote starts coming out of this clearing basically on top of me. I see him at the same time he sees me and turns around before coming into the open.
Cursing myself, I try the cottontail call softly thinking it cant hurt and he is probably a mile away. That's when the bugger comes charging at me on my right side and stops at 20 feet as I get up. Meanwhile I haven't been smart enough to turn the scope down but it probably wouldn't matter anyway as he's leaving Dodge pronto!!
I fired 2 shots shotgun style but it was his lucky day as I didn't touch him.
Why he came out the first time right on top of me, directly downwind of me, with the bait 250 yds away I'll never know. I really wished I had the shotgun or a semi .22
When I looked at his tracks the first time he turned and left at 30 yds they were not running, he walked back at the same pace he walked out so that tells me you may get 2nd chances with some yotes.
