I`m running into problems with butt plate fit. I bought a stock set for a no 4 from the UK, then bought a butt plate here in canada but the plate does not fit. I have about 3/16 " of wood showing on the bottom and about 3/32" on each side. The tang on the top of the plate is too small for the cutout in the stock and I also have more wood showing at the corners . I`m wondering if it`s possible that I have a n0 1 plate. The stock has 50 and an arrow on the bottom right behind the butt socket and has what looks like b 21 stamped in the wood under the butt plate. I need to know what I should look for in a butt plate and which one I already have.
Thanks in advance, G

There were no sizing differences when making No 4 buttplates or butts. There will be some variance in dimensions as a result of manufacturing or perhaps because of work done to alter either piece to get a proper fit. Generally speaking any buttplate will fit any butt, however some hand fitting may be required. If the wood stands too proud of the edges of the plate there is a risk of it chipping. Wood can be dressed down to fit with a rasp, file or sandpaper. It's worth trying a couple of other buttplates for a better fit as they are pretty cheap and available.

Was the stock set you bought original or was it newly manufactured? If it is a newer aftermarket set, they are sometimes made a bit oversized so that they can be sanded and fitted.

Trade-Ex had new Long Branch Butt Plates for sale a while ago at a VERY reasonable price.

Most of the No1 buttplates are made of brass, but so are some of the No4 buttplates. The No1 buttplate trap usually has a longer point/tip where you lift it with the finger. As mentioned , the No4 buttplates (brass, steel or alloy composition) are pretty cheap so you could get one and do a comparison. The differences would be more apparent if you had a couple to compare.

Sounds like you have a No1 buttplate the top tang that fits over the buttstock would look like half a oval . No 4 buttplate the tang would look like half of a circle.

Just to throw more into the pot, It is not uncommon to find a #1 butt on a #4 rifle. They are very easy to fit. As mentioned above, the top tang on a #4 is more rounded than a #1. You can get a #4 plate for about $2.50
