I'm picking up a Garand soon and I absolutely love it. However, it does kill my shoulder a bit. Just wondering where I would be able to find some sort of rubber buttplate for it, if one even exists. Even something to just slide over the end of the stock would be nice...a little something extra to take out a bit of the recoil.

If it hurts to shoot an M1, you're doing something wrong. Likely not pulling it tight enough into your shoulder. However, Pachmayr makes a slip on recoil pad.

The guy who I am buying it off of gave me a LOT of instruction on how to shoot it properly...but I think mayhaps my shoulder is sore because I had shot it a few times incorrectly.

Also, I was only shooting with a t-shirt on, not a whole lot of padding between me and the rifle.

I'm sure I'll be wearing a groove in my shoulder in no time...but thanks for the info on the pad, I'll have to check that out

Limbsaver also make a slip on pad that would help or you could use the PAST recoil shield that straps onto your shoulder.

Edit: I forgot to add that if you do use a slip on pad, be sure not to leave it on the stock after shooting. The rubber will bleach/mar/alter the finish on the stock and it will look horrible afterwards.

"...shot it a few times incorrectly..." That'd do it. Holding it loosely on your shoulder will tend to smack you a bit. Nothing like a .30-06 bolt action though.

You need to get a reproduction M1 Garand grenade rifle slip on recoil pad:

This is what I'd suggest. Simple, economical, and correct.

Not the most competitive option, maybe, but it looks correct.

Then there is the M1 'Knuckle" Creeping up on the rear sight and you get a knuckle in the eye on firing. Have seen that happen at least once.
Not to be confused with "M1 Thumb" Also saw that happen.

The worst one for this is the M1903 Springfield with the original straight grip stock. The length of pull on the buttstock is very short(must have been made for a race of dwarves). If you shoot in the prone position with the thumb across the top of the grip, which is the normal position, you will get a thumb knuckle in the nose. The way to avoid this is to rest the thumb on the right side of the grip.

Only time I ever got sore from shooting my M1 was at a military shoot earlier this year where I fired about 200 rounds from prone in one day. That kind of shooting will always take a toll on your shoulder.

+ 1 on the bolt action 30-06... my Rem 700 beats me left and right every time I use it. All in good fun though.
