Looking to buy a AR15 sporter, I favor a Colt or Armalite because they are the originals. I want a 20" barrel rifle in basic configuration with iron sights.

What other manufacturers should I consider?
Should I avoid certain ones?
How much should I expect to pay? They seam to ba all over the place on EE.

Thanks!

You mean you're looking for an A1 rifle essentially or an A2 rifle.

Honestly just build your own. I built my own A1 AR15 for under $900!!

Contact Mugwug on here, he has some awesome connections man.

He got me brand new 20" barrel with gas block and gas tube, actual U.S.G.I. A1 upper complete for under $500!

I built this entire rifle for under $900:

If you buy an actual Colt SP1 then you have to worry about parts availability and interchangeability. The takedown pins are unique to them, the fire control group pins are 0.177" instead of standard 0.155" so you have to buy specific trigger group compnents to only that type of pin etc etc Just small little annoying things that you can completely avoid by building your own old school rifle like I did.

I had to settle with DPMS lower but who cares, looks great, works just like any other lower out there.

You can find A1 or A2 stocks, handguards and grips for dirt cheap all over the EE, then you just need to worry about small parts and guts which almost everyone carries.

Great job, she's beautiful! I was thinking more A2 with 20" HBAR barrel, flat top with cary handle, Geissele trigger. I like the idea.

How hard was it to source all the parts?

Because you ask...

CMT, the parent company of Stag Arms, manufactured Dept of Defense certified M16/M4 parts for Colt since the early 70's and their slogan is "Worldwide Leader in M16 Manufacturing". So, maybe not the original brand, but they know 20" rifles, and make a very nice 20" HBAR (Model 4R) as you are asking about. We have them in stock, and we have Geissele triggers rolling in this week.

A 4R in its current config starts at $1325. Includes a lifetime transferable warranty.

Best regards,
Walter
