Hello guys:

I am going for my RPAL in a few weeks, and was just wondering if someone could tell me the process for buying a handgun.

Do you need to belong to a gun club to purchase a handgun?. I have read some peoples accounts of provincal CFO's telling people they need to belong to a club to have their RPAL renewed, but haven't read anything about purchasing.

What questions will the gun shop ask?
Does the gun shop issue a temp travel permit so you can get your gun home?

Thanks in advance for any info you all can provide.

As someone who is in the process of getting a 1st firearm too, I think I should let you know it's a very long process - I wrote my RPAL in June, and it's taken 2.5 months to see the application processed.

After getting the RPAL license you still have to get a club membership which is another mulitple-month process. You have to wait for scheduled club-level saftey courses and probationary shoots before you can get an ATT. I'd say I'm about at the half way point after 2.5 months.

Best of luck and stay patient (grin)

If you are in Alberta around the Edmonton/Sherwood Park area..club memberships are very fast to get.

If you need to renew a membership for a gun club...some retailers can sell you a membership on the spot.

I own a gun and was thinking of not renewing my membership . How long would it take the CFC to find out and confiscate my weapon ??? Hypothetically of course

Why would they? You would still have your rpal so you can legally own it. You wouldnt be able to renew your longterm att and therefore would not be able to legally transport your handgun. If it doesnt live your house then no need to transport it.

I was told as long as u own a restricted weapon u had to belong to a gun club . I might be wrong but this was coming from a reliable source ?? I hope ur right ....

In my experience it depends heavily on which province you live in. Here in Alberta it took me about three weeks to get my RPAL from class to card.

Also, a membership took me as long as it took my credit card to go through.

No, you need to belong to a gun club if you want a long-term ATT for a restricted weapon (in most cases).

You may procure/possess a restricted firearms if you meet one of four criteria, only two of which most likely could apply to you:

1. You have a gun club membership and like to punch paper.

2. You are a collector. Now as far as I have read (and I am not entirely informed on the collection side of things), all you need to do if you want to hold onto your firearms as a part of a collection (however small or large it may be) is to know some of the history/technical specs of it and make sure you inform the proper authorities (the CAFC?) that you want to hold onto it for collection purposes.

If you want collector status, your CFO will send you an application form. Fill it in, send it back.
When the gunshop initiates the transfer, they will need all the personal information that the CFC wants. You are in ON, your transfer may not be approved until you prove club membership. Folks have reported on their experiences; you can always call Orillia and ask. Once the transfer clears, a short term ATT will be issued so you can pick up your pistol and take it home. If it is being shipped to you, you don't need the ATT, the carrier has a blanket licence to transport firearms. To get an long term ATT, the application will have to be sent in by the club. For the club to do this, you will have to meet the club's criteria. This varies from club to club. The differences have been discussed at length on this site. It is best if your ATT application does not go in at year's end. A lot of ATT applications are being processed at that time, it may take a while to get yours. During slow periods, ATTs get issued rather quickly.

All im trying so say is :

Can i keep my gun without being part of a gun club , temporarely ?
Like if i leave for a long vacation and dont wanna renew my membership untill i come back; would that be possible ?
Also because i work 60hrs a week and only have time to go shoot once every 2 months and i would like to take a couple months break between renewing membership .

Is it legal to own restricted gun without being part of a gun club ? but still having my RPAL and of course my guns would stay home .

I don't think that would be worth is; since when you no longer the member of the club your long term ATT is no longer valid! Some clubs that have initiation fee require member to pay it again if they don't renew the membership in time. Who knows maybe a club will want you to take the safetu course again  I guess you'll have to check with the club you want to join...

hermann, it's probably best to phone the CFC and ask them about it. Logically it seems like they should let you hold onto it, but that doesn't mean they would necessarily.

My gun club doesnt have initiation fee . I left the gun club for 8 years but didnt own a gun at that time and when i went back I just paid and shot .

Communicate with the CFC. In my province (Nova Scotia) they are very accomodating. I enjoy the company of people who enjoy firearms and had no problem joining the local club (AMA in Dartmouth) .......you learn a lot from the old hands and can have a lot of fun, especially if you join IPSC.

Besides, why make life hard for bureaucrats? Can't expect them to cope well with exceptions to the rules.
