Buying a license & WHERE CAN I HUNT ? ~ Alberta

While trying to make complete sense of all the regulations, WMU's, and license aquisition, I found something that puzzled me.

When buying/applying for your hunting lic., in particular Whitetail Deer, adult hunters have 2 options;

- "White-tailed Deer" ($37)
- "Antlered White-tailed Deer SPECIAL LIC." ($37)

Now here's where my question comes from. Other Cervidae licenses offer both "antlered" & "antlerless" special lic's...

Is the basic "White-tailed Deer" license good for bucks or just doe, or both ?

Also, is there a WMU you have to hunt (pre-registered when you buy the lic.) ?

* I'm reading the Alberta Gov. 2012 Hunting Reg's magazine, and using the albertaregulations.ca page also.

T.I.A.

Go the part of the regs with the Big game seasons (page 46 in the 2011 regs I am looking at), and anything with a black square beside it requires a draw, or is known as a "special license". Draws are WMU specific, but a general tag can be used in any WMU with a general season. Which WMUs were you thinking about hunting? Some WMUs allow you to take either a buck or doe with a general license, others require a draw for anterless and antlered too.

Spend many hours with the regs booklet. Every WMU can be different. My general is good for bucks and does in my zone. Across the road, does are only good from Nov1-7. The other side of the WMU, the Supp tags are no good. My General Elk is good for antlerless and 3 point or better during archery but only for 3 point or better during rifle. Find your zone and learn it well.

Thanks guys. :)

The more info the better, but I'm leaning towards the "learn my WMU zone" part already.

Looking specifically into 406, maybe 408/412/414/416. I found what you're talking about though.

I guess just learning were specifically I can or cant hunt in my particluar WMU is my last hurdle.

Can you hunt any WMU with a genral lic., or do you tell them which zone you want when buying the tag ?

;)

If you are just talking about whitetails, you would need to have been successfully drawn for 406 and 408. The other WMUs you mention can be hunted with a general tag.

No, you can't hunt any WMU with a general tag, some require draws. You can hunt any WMU with a general tag that has an open season and doesn't require a draw, so no, you don't have to tell them which WMU when you buy the general tag.

Yeah. Square box beside the dates means Draw is required for being valid.

Short easy way to look at your tags, is that your General Tag is for Either ###, the others for Antler-less (defined as under 4 inches of antler, FWIW)
It's $19 IIRC, to get the other two tags. Gives you the option of a fat doe or two, if the WMU is open for them. Hint. If the WMU is open for a second doe, use that tag first.

I mainly hunted in the 500 series zones. Read and understand the regs. They make sense eventually . :)

I'm pickin' up what you're layin' down...

Thx ;)

Next question is...

Where am I NOT ALLOWED to hunt ? For instance, in WMU 406, based on this map.

I know the Provincial Recreation Areas (yellow areas) are no-go, but what about;

- OHV fluz zones ?
- regular FLUZ zone ?

You will not be hunting 406 for any type of deer this year. Draw only for any deer in 406 with a rifle.

I think there's another "supplemental draw" or something, the specific name of which I forget, for when all the tags don't get drawn or hunters back-out from collecting their tags.

Specifically for WMU406, that is... Calling about it Monday.
