Looking to buy a new rifle for long range shooting.
Narrowed it down to two sets of different rifles...

The Tikka choice ( more expensive choice) is between the T3X CTR or a T3X Varmint.

The Savage choice (cheaper selection) is between the 110 Tactical or a 12FV.

Thoughts????
(Likely 6.5CM)

what do you plan to do with it? PRS, hunt, F-class, plink, 100yds? 400, 1000+?

Pretty much any rifle is decent out of the box these days...but some will perform better in different areas...which is also true for calibre selection (factory? handloads? etc...)

You probably would want way better stock for all of them, so keep that extra cost in mind.

If you were to change barrels Savage would be easier to to. Out of the box Tikkas would probably be a bit nicer overall.

If you are price value oriented buy something from EE instead of brand new.

I get the tikka is considered the finer of the two choices, but to me it’s more important what the results are at the far end of 1000 yards and not so much at the close end. So is there any likelihood the 110 Tactical can perform as good as the CTR at 1K?

The cheap 12FV 6.5cm that Cabela's has is pretty decent for $550 or whatever. The stock forend is pretty solid, but the butt is hollow and with the heavy barrel throws the balance off. I filled mine in with lead wheel weights and caulking... weighs north of 13lbs now, doesn't move at all even without a brake. Very accurate rifle. You could get the 12fv and a B&C stock for less then the price of the Tikka

Well, I’m still torn on what to do...I’ve definitely narrowed it down to the CTR or the 110 Tactical....however, I’ve been lugging my big fclass rifle around and making it work. Today I missed a coyote I should have had(so I decide to check my rifle) so I grabbed a buddy and my little 8” ar500 gong and went and set it up at 1017 yards. Right on a spot I’m gonna bait and try to kill a dog at 1K. We had about a 5mph cross wind so I put on 26 moa for elevation and 2 moa for wind. I was a touch low and needed a touch more wind, so I went to my chart and put on 2 more moa in elevation and another 1.5 in wind. Second shot slightly high but wind was good. Went back to the chart came down 1 moa for 1025 yards (27 moa) and smacked the 8” gong. My buddy was happy for me but ticked at the same time...lol. Earlier today he had his Tikka A1 Tactical out and was struggling to hit a 30” gong at 1000. We all have those days! Anyhow, as we drove away I told him....I said, you know if I go and spend money on a CTR or whatever and I can’t do that same thing with it....(get on a 8” gong within 2-4 shots at 1K)....I’m just gonna end up going back to the heavy fclass. So, I guess no one is ever to know for sure, but do those choices of factory rifles likely shoot good enough to accomplish the same feat?

Lots of variables come into play between two different shooters, different gear and ammunition. My tikka holds pretty close to half moa at 1k with a fair amount of time developing a load for it.

My choice would be the Savage, but not the 110 Tactical. If you don't mind some weight, the 10T-SR from Cabela's is, generally, a good shooter. I prefer the flush magazine and the heavy non-fluted barrel over the 110 Tactical. I added some more weight to the butt stock of mine to both improve balance and further reduce recoil. I wouldn't want to carry it very far though, with scope it's in the 13 lb range.
I like Tikkas, I have one in fact. They're a good rifle IMO but at twice the price of the Savage, they should be.
