Buying a new Savage just for the action: Which model?

Howdy folks. Considering the current production lines of Savage standard shank long action rifles, can someone please advise me?

I'm buying a rifle just for the action, then planning on restocking and rebarreling it. Do I choose the super cheap model 111 Hunter XP package rifle with the top bolt release, no accutrigger and no accustock? Or go to the 111 FCNS model with bottom bolt release, accutrigger, and accustock?

Which will give me better / more options for restocking or dropping into a chassis?

What type of magazine and bottom metal does the 111 Hunter XP have? I had one of these years ago, and I think the magazine and bottom metal was the same as the current 111FCNS, but I am not certain. The reason I ask is because I briefly owned a 116 Trophy Hunter package rifle, and it had a different (plastic) magazine retention system, which I'd prefer to avoid.

Thanks in advance...

Thanks for the suggestions: I guess I should have stated that I'm on a budget, so a premium action or a higher end model is not what I'm interested in.

I have a Savage 11 and it does not have the accutrigger, the DBM system is all metal, and the bolt release is up top. I have replaced the factory trigger with a Timney. Lots of aftermarket barrels and stocks are available. I am also on a budget and went the same route you are going but on a short action. I have a Wheeler Engineering barrel vise and wrench plus the gauges so I can change barrels myself. Good luck!

If you want to pick up more info on Savage rifles go to savageshooters.com

Fellow bought one with TARGET Accu-trigger just over $600 last year in Stittsville ON
if your buy a barrel get a 1/7 twist if its a 223 you are building

The action with the top bolt release will ne easier to find an aftermarket stock for. I'm not certain if many if any at all are available for the accustock actions.

keep looking in the EE for a used 111 with the top bolt release and the all metal bottom metal and mag, you should be able to get one for around the $400 mark.( stay away from the plastic bottom metal ones) Order a Shilen Match select barrel around the $500 mark and a Rifle Basix trigger for about $150. Then keep yours eyes open on the EE for HS precision take off stock you should be able to pick one up for around the $250 mark.

Should be $200 something for the action if I buy the $400 package rifle and sell off the barrel and scope. But that's a nice option for someone building a short action rig.

That's exactly the info I'm looking for, thanks. Ditto for homer76.

What about the Stevens 200?

Out of production now, aren't they?

If you don't need a mag find a mod 12 shoot the stock barrel you might be surprised how well it can do.

I had one in 223, it was excellent. But only available in short action in calibres that I don't want for this build.

That's the general plan. However, with new 111 Hunter XP packages going for $400, I don't expect to find a better deal on the EE. I'd get more in resale value for a new, unfired take-off barrel than for a slightly used one.

Check to make sure the new ones have top bolt release and accual metal bottom metal because I don't thing they do
