buying a Russian sks

I have been reaching the sks as of late. I basically see the Tula and Izhevsk. And I see some are matching, "new" unfurnished with different years. I was wondering what is the best one to buy for collecting and not firing? I am looking for one that is readily available to purchase. not a "one of a kind", just the best of the bulk according to place and date of issue etc. and what year would you pick. What would you consider a fair price for them? I have been "rifling" through the posts (rim shot please!) but have not seen the specific answer I am looking for.

Izhevsk would be the best for collecting as they made very few compared to the tula's. Also this should be with the red rifles

PS check out west rifle they have some killer looking ones right now

For collecting, the Tula SKS 1949 with spike bayonet is on top of the list because 49 was the first year of production and the spike bayonet are only in early 49,the late 49 were fitted with a blade bayonet. SKS 1949 are scarce and expensive for a nice one,you wont find them in every place that sell SKS. Izhevsk are limited in supply because they were made only in 1953 and 54,some are unissued too. Russian SKS have the year of manufacture stamped on the rear cover until part 1955. Later 55 and 56 dont have year on cover,only a little star on left side of receiver. Some 1955 have the year on cover and the star on receiver, thoses are scarce. !956 with laminate stock and the letter "K" after the serial number are likely the last russian SKS made so they are very desirable as well. Some "K" have the hardwood stock instead of laminate and are equally collectable. Any others year(1950-1954) Tula,unissued are also collectable. Price range from $250-$350 for unissued, a nice 1949 reach $500. As mentionned, go in Red Rifle forum for more infos.
