I'm looking at buying a used never fired pistol from outside the province I live in. How should the process go for a buyer to protect themselves. Its not a dealer sale but a person to person sale. Does the registration change then cash change hands then ship?

I have had the experience of purchasing firearms from individuals in other provinces but not selling. But if it were the case, I'm positive that I would not transfer the registration until I had payment in hand. What if the individual did not send the money? Now your stuck having to change the registration back to you.

Luckly all my experiences regarding out of province purchases have been good.

I've always sent cash, then the transfer, then the pistol. You've got a zero trader rating, the seller may be uncomfortable transferring before the $$$ shows up. If you buy from someone reputable, it's reasonably safe to send the $$$ first. There's not really any system to protect the buyer, other than leaving a poor trader rating, or calling the police if the guy takes the $$$ and runs. Most here are very honest, just look at random people's trader rating, I'd say 98% of members have never had a single negative rating given.

Some of my purchases were not through EE so there was no trader rating to look to. I just sent him a copy of my RPAL and the cash, then prayed that it would show up. (It did).

The seller also has a 0 rating.

I sorta thought the Registration would change hands that way the buyer knows the item really exists. Then ship after money is received.

I have been buying aand selling guns for my personal collection for 30 years. (100's)NEVER had a problem with payment or vise versa getting the gun I paid for. I serial numbered registered gun is just not the thing to rip someone off of and try to hide. Not the item that a con-man wants documented. Now it may not be described correctly when you get it, but chances are you will get something that can chamber a round.
Now the one time I was truely ripped off was in the good old USA. Paid cash for a gun. A mint Springfield 06...Did the paperwork. had to leave the gun for the 7 day waiting period. Went back... store was gone. Packed up and closed down. It has been 3 years and am still trying to track him down by his old FFL. No cooperation from ATF whatsoever.

I have done a couple of restricted transfers. Both of you have zero ratings. Most people on this site are great, but hey, anybody can sign up. I suggest you exchange phone numbers at least, and have a talk about the deal. Long and the short, the person who has the gun registered to them is the owner, and to ship a restricted to somebody who is not the owner is quite very likely against the law. I would negotiate the trasaction on those terms.

My very IMHO.

this is a tough call, i really do not like to send money to new people. In fact i wouldnt. Best advise, is look for someone else who has a trader rating(high one) then most likely it will be fine. i have done trades with zero TR people in the past, but i made them send their end of the trade first, than i transfer and ship mine. All have turned out good so far.

I can see that. So would I call the CFC before anything happens to confirm the gun is kosher I am pretty sure they will not give me the name of owner . I guess I just don't know all the in and outs of this. I don't want my first kick at athe can to be a mess :)

That works for you because you have a trader rep. In this case we are both 0's :)

I have let the buyer know I am a little worried about the 0 trader rating. I will have to see what he comes back with. Could be as easy as using a local dealer as a broker.

No my advise to you was for you to search the EE for someone else who has the same gun, and has a high TR. If there is none, put up a WTB ad and look for one. Chances are high you will find the same gun, maybe even at a better price.

we all started with zero
my advice is to send western union or canada post both offer some recourse if the deal goes bad. i would ask for a fax of the sellers Rpal that way you have the number on hand if it needs to go to the police and you can at least calm your nerves that the guy can even own the gun.also ask nicely for him to fill our your rating and be sure to do his the day you get the gun.all though that does not always work i have hand three deals where the other party was to busy to post mine even after i posted there's.
anyways it is always a risk but you have to get your feet wet sometime.
if i may ask how do you have a used unfired that seems to contradict it self
