  • What does one look for in buying a USGI bolt for the M305?
  • Will any manufacturer fit in the Norinco receiver?
  • Can we rate/rank the quality of USGI manufacturers (I rear TRW tops all)?
  • Any potential issues in installing a used bolt/carrier in the M305?
  • Are there particular wear points to check prior to purchase?

As always, your assistance is appreciated!

New or used will have to be fitted for headspace. M14 parts are U.S. 'Restricted for Export' parts too. You might find one in Canada though.

I'm not bothering on mine. I'm not convinced that when using the stock barrel and sustained fire that heats the barrel, that the bolt is the limiting factor in accuracy. On the other hand if you are fitting a target barrel, it would make sense.

Is your headspace really terrible? The biggest problem with a usgi bolt is finding one. They come up now and then, but expect to pay anywhere from $250- $400 for one. The usgi bolt increases case life, it doesn't do a lot for accuracy. Most of them will just drop in, that's how the gun was designed was for interchaneability. They come up on the EE now and then and get snapped up almost instantly.

Replacing your bolt has nothing to do with accuracy. It's a longevity/durability improvement (though most will never shoot enough to care) and a means of changing headspace without rebarrelling.

nothing to do with accuracy...... i strongly disagree

here's the scoop

manufacture is of no issue, get one that fits your rifle. I don't buy into the hype that a trw is worth any more than one of the other usgi bolts.
In most cases, 99% of the used bolts i've handled have been suitable for a install to a norc/poly set up.
what i have found is that in general, a usgi bolt meets the correct receiver tolerances much better than a chinese bolt, which equates to less slop in the movement of the bolt through it's entire cycle and particularly as it cams through the receiver bridge.
what a usgi bolt allows you to do is convert your m14 to match .308 specs. "Match" specs are called that for a reason, a match rifle is an accurate rifle..... a tight chamber leads to increasing accuracy if all other variables are brought to that level.
this means that if you install a usgi bolt to your barrelled action and it is correctly lapped in to mate the bolt lugs, the headspace will shrink from 7.62 nato to a very tight .308
generally about 1.631 to 1.632 is acceptable for a battle rifle type .308 match chamber.

if installing a usgi bolt and you get nato headspace of greater than 1.636 , I would not even use the bolt and stick with a chinese one. likewise we never.... ever lap a usgi bolt out to nato spec chamber.... this can get you too deep into the bolt lug hardness.

every usgi bolt swap i have done has increased accuracy using .308 ammo

as stated above, they are pricey, illegal to import unless you import an entire rifle (ie LRB). some are to be had for big $$$ here in the ee.

I should add that by and large the newer imports have considerably "better" headspace than previous years and are averaging 1.636 to 1.638 headspace measurements.... which only puts you a couple thou over Nato Match of 1.6345 so the days of getting strung out on having a usgi bolt are pretty much moot. even safer than before to shoot both 7.62 nato surplus AND .308 commercial thru the same pipe.

Hi Thomas, while what you say is true, if a person laps in a Chinese bolt and then handloads and neck sizes, the difference largely evaporates. This is far cheaper than going to USGI parts.

That being said, my M14's are largely made up of USGI and US commercial parts and I run very little in the way of Chinese parts on my Chinese receivers, so it's a bit of a case of do as I say and not as I do, LOL.

Actually, come to think of it the only Chinese parts across two rifles I'm using are 1 barrel (a shorty), one gas system that happens (totally by chance) to gauge to USGI spec and one polytech trigger housing (with GI internals) that happened to gauge to spec. Not much China left across two complete rifles - LOL.

nothing to do with accuracy...... get one that fits your rifle.

Hey Doc ... I'm preparing to build a rifle, is it better to wait until I have the receiver of choice, then select a bolt (if need be)? I was offered a USGI bolt locally for about 125 and thought I should look into it. Is wear an issue on a bolt? I do know it needs a new bearing and clip. Cheers, Neil

If it's a take off from a prohib m14 or if it's new you should be good to go. If it's ever been fitted to a norc receiver i'd have it checked out beofre picking it up.
