I am really confused about what one can bring back from the US. Am I allowed to buy some cast bullets and bring them back in checked luggage on a plane? Thanks Karl

As I used to live right at the border I have done some extensive research on this. There is NOTHING in Canada Customs law that prevents you as a citizen from importing up to 1500 rounds of ammunition into Canada without a permit from DFAIT (Department of Foreign Affairs & International Trade).

The trouble starts & ends with the US laws. In order for you to posess ammunition or parts therof in the US you need an ATF Form 6NIA permit. That DOES NOT cover the export. For that you need to get a permit to export ammunition from the US Department of State. The trouble is, they won't issue them to anyone other than a licensed firearms business. Joe citizen can't get one- period.

If you get caught without the permits in the US you could be in big trouble. As for bringing it back to Canada yourself, I can't tell you to do it but if they don't check you at the border that is their fault isn't it? As for getting it through the mail, the US would have to check the mail going out of the country. Not too sure how often that happens. Canada Customs will let you import it. If you want more info, PM me & we can talk on the phone.

we bring ammo, bullets, powder, primers across with no problem what so ever.

H4895 and Varget powder here at local shop is &36.95 CDN and there is $16.99 US . we have been buying eveything there for the last 1 1/2 years.

I used to buy bullets (lead) from one place in Nebraska.
Called them last week and they told me no, we can't anymore.
I was disappointed, but well what can I do.
Stupid American rules...

Or not.
It's a crap shoot.

I've been given ammo by US LE (DEA, Homeland Sec. State Pol.) to take home... When I ask if their trying to set me up they either tell me "yeah... whatever" or they scoff at the idea of an otherwise law abiding person ending up in jail over a few boxes of ammo or spent brass...

I suppose it's a crap shoot, but I ain't losing' any sleep over it.

i called customs regarding cast bullets, they say its just a bunch of metal to them , it seems if its a manufatued bullet its different?? i think theres no problem to bring cast bullets, i wouldnt try on a airplane, but call customs, its not always so hard, wade

This discussion has gone on and on and on, don't know what is so hard to understand.....

ITS THE US LAW, NOT THE CANADIAN LAW.

I was in Montana and Idaho this past August. I got back to customs and told the lady that I'd bought a scope and electronic scale. She asked if I had bought any reloading supplies and I said no because I wasn't sure what I could buy. She said here is where you should shop in Coeur d' Alene, it's where she bought all her reloading supplies. She then gave me a list of what supplies and amounts you can buy. Don't know what suprised me most was what I could buy or how friendly she was.

Got that list still? I would love to see a scan of it. :D

Some of us just keep wringing our hands over this topic because it is not the Canadian Customs this time!!! They can advise you where to buy in the US and what to buy all they want, but if you are caught with, Bullets, brass, powder, primers, scopes, stocks, triggers, etc. by the U-S-A- CUSTOMS leaving the USA you're in a heap a trouble boy. What's so hard to understand about this!! The US passed these restrictions so that terrorists living in Canada could not get supplies in the USA and use them against the US....I know, I know, I also don't see how this is possible with our tough Immigration laws...I know, I know, the cdn. gubment knows where every illegal immigrant is at any time......(rant mode off)
